Hey everyone I am so happy! My S.Purpurea spp. Purpurea seeds germinated!!!!! Not all of them just about 10-15. But that must mean 4 weeks is enough for Purpurea Purpurea!!!! The germinated seeds look like a extremly small main rhizome then a grappling hook on the end of it,or maby like a clenched fist of more root hairs. When will I see pitchers or cotyledons? When should I replant them into individual pots or group in large pots? How to I harden them off as a seedling or is that not needed? Thanks!!! Nep.G.

Congrats!

I'm currently waiting for some seeds to germinate also (Sarracenia, Drosera, Darlingtonia). If you could post pics of what they look like right now I would be really grateful. I haven't seen anything growing yet... Except for what looks like a couple of thin, upright sticks (??) . Maybe those were already mixed in the soil, but I doubt it. Anyway, if you have pics of them first germinating, or what they look like, please post. Thanks

Pat

I grow mine in community pots and leave them there about a year or so. Transplanting is easy at that time, usually done in the spring or summer in order to give the seedlings time to acclimate to their new homes.

Congrats!

Thanks everyone!!!! I was really surprized today! Almost all of the seeds are sprouting or sprouted! I am gonna be full of Purpurea Purpurea's!!! Oz Thanks for the info on pots. Also how do you harden them off or acclimate them to normal Humidity? Pat. I can try to post a pic but I am not sure if I can since my camera sucks at extremly up close focusing. I can try though. A few a from today sprouting. Here goes the pic I hope it isn't that bad! Nep.G.

Here is the &#365.00 Greenhouse with 72 peat pots I have them in. I just set a flourescent light at the top to increase light mostly and heat is higher.

Here are some Purpurea Purpurea seeds in the peat pots. I know this is a terrible picture but on some seeds notice a little curl like a C or a ( on the end of the seeds. This is the little rhizome.

To harden them off to normal humidity(which i wouldn't do until they are larger)just slowly open the greenhouse, starting by lifting it up a few mm and them over a period of six weeks gradually open it more and more....easy!

NG, I don't think you are taking bad pics at all, your are doing well for the constraints of a new and unfamiliar camera.

I like the shots of how your germinating your seed.... I notice your growing them on.. oh.. what do you northerners call those things... a radiator? (We don't have'em much here in texas) how hot does it get? And do you have anything between the green house and the radiator?

It gets pretty hot in there. I lift up the top to let fresh air in and it is like a heat blast. Sorta like my Merrilliana when I open the top to take a look. Nothing is between the greenhouse and the radiator. I figured it would be fine without a space and loook what results I am getting or have gotten!

I sow my seeds in 4" 1/2 pots in about early february and place them in my unheated greenhouse. The compost usually frezes solid 5 or 6 times wich duplicates the stratification process that happens in nature. They usually germinate in about late june when the temperatures get warmer!. I leave the seedlings in the pots untill the following year when they have pitchers about 3" in length depending on the species.  Then I re pot them individually into 3" pots where they remain for a further 2 years.  I'll post a pic as soon as I can get one!!

Back row: S.Alata, Leucophylla, Leucophylla
Front row: S.Psittacina, S. Minor, S. Peurpurea ssp Purpurea.

They are all 2 years old and are ready for reppoting individually.

Cute plants Richard!

It sounds like your seedlings are getting too much heat, NG. You may want to place a layer of cardboard(or anything else)between the sprouts and the radiator. I'd say ideal temp. would be around 75F with high(but not dripping wet)humidity. But if what you're doing now is working...

OK Chris I think I probably should do that.

I'm trying sarracenia seeds this year. I tried but never managed to sprout them. But that was after soaking them in Ga3 and skipping stratification, just dumped them in the bog. Now I put several different varieties of seed in a moist paper towel in the fridge. How long should I leave them in?

Leave them in the fridge for around 2 months.
