in saltwater tanks it has been my experience that a glass heater in the sump (if you have one) or one well shielded from rocks should be enough (they can be hidden) and if your using metal halide as well, provide pretty good heating. I am not sure if substrate heating in a marine environment is a 'good thing' I haven't used it or thought of using it. I do know it is good for planted fresh water tanks...
