Updates on my cape 'dews

Today, I decided to take some pics of my cape dews. My largest one is making another flower. It made its first one about a month after I got it, then I cut it off. Now, a month later, there is another flower, so I'm just gonna leave it.

Here's my plant's little developing flower:

And here's one of its largest leaves (in cm):

Remember that little baby dew that I posted about a while back? (Here is the post) Well, here it is now:

Here's a bug I put on its leaf a few days ago:

The seedling does not seem to have 'fins' as D. capensis 'Broad Leaf' does so far. I wonder which types of D. capensis Dr Ziemer grows near his 'Alba'.

Thanks for the comment, *Barracuda_45*.

Khelljuhg, I personally think that this guy is the 'red' form, since it has those long leaves, and its tentacles are very red, and its unfolding leaves are all red, and the new leavse have a tint of red mixed into the green.

Looking good, Ben!

Thanks jimscott. Say, when will my little cape 'dew start flowering? I'm not sure how old it is, but I suppose all you experts can tell about how old it is.

Once it gets around 3-4 inches in diameter it should begin flowering. I think that seedling is the red form.

Yes, it is possible, but Dr Ziemer has sent it to you as 'Alba'? Actually, I feel that your seedling may be growing fast, as many vigorous hybrids do, although I may be a bit hasty. As I have mentioned some time, I have crossed 2 varieties of D. capensis and the hybrid grows very fast. It was a seedling last spring but now it is even raising up a scape. In any case, it seems to be better to wait until the plant grows bigger.

Well, the thing is that I sowed the seeds a few days after I got 'em, which was in August, 2004. They grew in less-than-optimal conditions, with little light. I let them grow for a few months, but then I turned off their lights and just forgot about them (I was a beginner at the time, and discouraged). But, then I made a new terrarium that was good for them, and all of them died (from shock). Except, some had little stems because of the low light, and 2 little plants popped outta one stem, and grew fast. I had to seperate them, since one would've died. I fed the larger one more than the smaller one, and it is much larger and healthier. That is the one in the pic. The smaller one doesn't have erect leaves yet.

Oh, I see. Then it seems to be a bit hard to specify exactly what it is, although it looks like 'All Red' at least in the appearance. Or in case that 'Alba' is crossed with another variety with a similar shape, it is difficult to recognise it unless its offsprings by self pollination germinate.

I have put my plant about 2 inches closer to the light, so now it is about 3-4 inches away from a 26 watt light. I also noticed that my baby plant's unfurling leaves are in knots, and aren't straight like my other cape dew. When I looked at pictures of the 'red' form of D. capensis, I also noticed these 'knots', and not in any other form of D. capensis.

Actually, some other forms can have leaves unfurling like that, too. And some types of what are called 'All Red' are rather like other forms than your 'knot-forming' plant (somehow the forms which turn red are all named in the same way). In addition, a hybrid can reflect the features of its parents, so it is possible that your plant sends up new leaves in that way.

Well, after growing a few weeks closer to the lights, a bit has changed with my plant. I noticed that the older leaves turn 100% red, and the crown is also 100% red. Only the bottoms of the leaves where they meet the crown are red. Otherwise, they are a redish green with tons of dew and very red tentacles. Plus, its leaves are long.

You can also see the knot in the new leaf:

How about hair? Do the leaves have hair?

Nope, they don't seem to have any hair at all. Why?
