Isn't that odd how regia's dead leaves look all burned up just like a VFT's??

Wonder why these two plants dead leaves turn so black while your average houseplant's leaves usually turn yellow or brown when dying or dead?

Nice Pyro! How much light does that bad boy get? Mine are always so much smaller. But, they get quite a bit sun out in the greenhouse.... So I guess that's why.

It is down in the crawlspace so 400W HID about 60 cm below it and the bulb is on a track...

i cant even get 'Big Easy' to grow......good work

Fyster...........ive got orchids whose dead leaves turn pretty black......its not limited to CP's

I've killed two regias..........

Could never get 'em acclimated........ :(

Nice plant and a great idea for using grow space.

The reason cp's get so black when they die is because they are so HARD CORE... no other plant is cool enought to turn black they just turn dukb yellow or brown :-)) :-)):-))

Nice D. regia Pyro. I've tried growing this plant in a variety of scenarios, from terrariums to a windowsill. I've achieved a good deal of success with those attempts, so now I'm trying to grow one outside. We'll see how it acclimates...

In fact, I have five regia seeds that I'm trying to sprout now, so I can kill them later on......... ;)

I think it's because they are closly related. If you were to do some horrid experiment by crosing a Drosera with a VFT, Regia would be the one to do it with...

I've heard that you can sometimes get seedlings to sprout, but they never last long...

Man that is one mean looking sundew... regia and filiformis both remind me of a monster... would not want to be a fly.

For those of you who have been successful in growing this, is there any secret to it? I know they like cool nights.

Hey Baylor,

I find they grow best under highland conditions. They also seem to appreciate a loose media. And I usually have them on a tray that I allow to stand dry a day or two before adding water again. Other than that I just leave mine alone and they grow

Thanks Pyro - seems easy enough. Impressive looking plant and so hard to find!

No problem. Unfortunately I am totally out of spares at the moment or I'd be happy to send one off to you. Odds are I can pick up a few more in the not too distant future, I'll try and remember to contact you if I do.

Cheers

Thanks Pyro, I appreciate it. As a side note, how cold does it get at night where you are? I keep hearing they like temperatures around 65 at night.

Speaking of which, look how great the regia that you sent me is doing. Its growing like mad and look at all the bugs it catches even though its in a terraium. I have it growing at about 80F - 85 during the day and 60 - 70 at night with higher humidity.

Baylor,

Well I am in Atlanta so nights are all over the board depending on the season. But in the crawlspace where I grow this beast it is a pretty stable temp cycle of 75 days and 68 nights in summer and 70 days 60 nights in winter.

Ery,

Looking good :)

Ery,
Beware the higher humidity. Sometimes D. regia freak out in humid conditions...

This is another plant (like D. schizandra) that grows well for me all winter and then struggles all summer. I've got some ideas for a highland setup in the basement for this summer... :headwall:
