Hardyness

I live in the southeast on the border of zone 7b. I am trying 2 subtropical species in my bog this year. I want to try D. capensis and D.nitidula x occidentalis (no dry dormancy). I know Dean Cook, who is in a similar zone, growns many South African species otside. I have also heard of both of the plants I mentioned being hardy in Dallas Texas, a similar, if not slightly warmer climate then my own. Can I grow these plants? what success have you had with growing species normally not hardy to your area?
