A very nice red clone from Phil Faulisi

Nice Dustin! Beautiful photos too.

I miss my slackii. I had one that had gotten about 50-cent piece size...a real beauty. All of sudden it just up and died after thriving. I was so upset.

Have no idea what caused its demise. Nothing had changed in its growing conditions. It just went splat.

One day I'll have another and try again.

Phil (aka Philcula) has always had some of the finest plants I ever saw at many a BACPS meeting. And a very knowledgable and friendly man. Definitely knows what he is about. Always good to see.

I wonder why the top one is going to flower for me. Jan (from CPUK) asked me about it and I said, the only specific odd thing I did to it was freeze it to 15F (-9C) and repot frequently...

Gorgeous, Dustin!
This is one that has been out of my collection for some time. Mine used to do the stem thing, but they would crawl along the soil surface, instead of standing straight up.
The original name of the plant before it was given it's latin name was Drosera "Highland Red," so maybe they like a brief cold snap(hence the flowering)?

Cheers,

Joe

Yes indeed, this is a highland species. It really dislikes hot nights. PAK, hang in there, the plant will probably return from the roots in time. Just keep it moist and be patient.

Its been a rather long time...

Hmm I wonder if mine will be okay this summer? Dang Florida

I got a slackii from Ca. Carnivores last fall, and it never looked very good. I never even got 1 leaf to open all the way. I thought it was gonna die so I took a leaf cutting. Well, the leaf cutting is now 3 or 4 plants in a 3 inch pot, and the original plant still looks the same. I recently repotted it and pulled the crappy looking roots off of it. We'll see if it grows.....if not at least I have my cuttings.

CNCreefer,

Was the D. slackii you bought from C.C. planted in peat, or LFS? I think that sometimes nursery don't transplant their plants often enough and the soil becomes broken down and full of bacteria and minerals. I would guess that your leaf cuttings are doing very good because they are growing in fresh soil.

nepenthes gracilis,

What's the soil mix you are using?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi guys thanks for all the superb comments!

Soil mix, Brian, is Chilean Sphagnum for the red clone and living domestic Sphagnum for the typical flowering clone.

It was potted in peat/sand mix. I repotted it in new peat/sand and it looks a little better. Still too soon to tell.

Cool species . I sowed some sarracenia seeds and there are these plants that look like D. slackii growing out . It could be D. dielsiana because i grow the seedlings near my D. dielsiana plant . But i don't know , i grow the plants outside . How do you tell the difference between dielsiana and slackii ?

I think D. dielsiena is a little more spoon-shaped in the leaf than D. slackii, which is a "wedge shaped" leaf, but does not taper that much from lamina to petiole.
I hope that came out clearly.
In Nature, D. slackii grows in peaty soils, but my past exerience showed it grew much better in lf shagnum(milled or as is), just as Dustin is growing it.

Cheers,

 Joe
