The leaves of many Nepenthes species naturally turn red when exposed to intense sunlight. Here is a plant of N. rafflesiana growing out in the open in Bako National Park.

As you can see all the leaves are a dark red, as opposed to N. rafflesiana plants growing in more shady conditions, which usually have green leaves.
