Nepenthes Safari

Last weekend a friend and I went on a Nepenthes safari. We took a plane, rented a car, drove about an hour, and hiked in the rainforest to where we had heard Nepenthes grew. But first we did not fail to make an offering to the Nepenthes god.

We must have given the proper offering because it wasn't long before we found this.

And this.

You might be wondering why, in the rainforest, the plants were in pots. The reason was that we were at the Leilani Hapuu Nepenthes Nursery (Sam Estes, owner) in the rainforest of Pahoa on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is true that we took a plane and drove a car to get there, but we had to hike for only about 30 seconds from the car to the plants. Here are more photos.

This is a photo of Nepenthes and "companion plants." There are so many plants that weeding them is like having to paint the Golden Gate Bridge. When you're finished, it's time to start again.

We had a great time looking at the plants and talking with Sam. I bought a few plants even though I don't have any space for them. I hope he doesn't mind me posting these photos.

Looks like a great trip. I'd love to see that all in person also. Any idea what the really dark pitchers in the first pic are?

2 big thumbs up! Looks great. I love the deep dark pitcher in the 1st pic.

Wow, nice jungle. ;)

I want to see Sam's variegated N. alata in the flesh.

Amazing pictures! What plants did ya get from him?

Now that would be a fun trip. Drooool

How cool is that!!! A little slice of heaven!

These are amazing. Ah, to be able to see so many plants in real life. One day, one day...
