Thomas Carow

Hiya Fellow Nep'ers-

Okay, I've heard of BE, MT, EP, AW and E I E I O, but my continuing hunt for a N. mac has brought me to this name, Mr. Thomas Carow, a German CP grower (forgive my ignorance to those that have known him for awhile :-()

JensB says that he sells the "real deal" N. mac. But unfortunately, he doesn't ship to the good ol' US of A :-(

JensB has provided this link from another board. Its in German, but it has two pictures of two clones of N. mac. The cog wheeled spike peristome one, I believe is from AW, the uniform peristome is from Mr. Carow.

Also, does anyone have a N. mac from Mr. Carow in the states?

Well, there is always variability within a given population of most anything and everything; and that fact certainly extends to Nepenthes macrophylla and others. Those plants that I have had a chance to see in the wild, vary a good deal in terms of their exposure, elevation, the availability of water, and many other cultural requirements.

Carow has been a figure in the world of carnivorous plants for decades and has managed to name or describe more than a few species of Heliamphora and other genera, along with Andreas Wistuba (http://www.carnivorousplants.org/cpn/Species/v34n1p4_6.html) or on his own. He also recently published a fantastic photo book of creepy plants in the wild, Karnivoren. http://www.terraforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118100&highlight=thomas+carow

Offhand, I do not know whether any of Carow's clones have reached the states just yet; though I have been told that some are in Canada ("Let's Blame Canada") . . .

Carow's book is WONDERFUL. It is all in German but I still love going through it because the pictures are just so beautiful.

None of Thomas' material is in the US at this time to my knowledge, except maybe a couple of tings in private collections.

It looks like an interesting book. Is it available anywhere on this side of the world Pyro? Also how many pages is it? Is it worth the price you paid for it? and speaking of price...how much did it cost ya?

I ordered mine through the the German Amazon site (http://www.amazon.de/Karnivoren-Die...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1258673435&sr=1-1), which is quite simple to use, even for someone unfamiliar with the language. Amazon's format is the same, everywhere.

Karnivoren is 192 pages long, illustrated exclusively with color photographs, from the world over; and I cannot recommend this title more. It is, hands down, the most beautiful book on carnivorous plants that I've ever seen (and there were some long out-of-print Japanese books which were really great in their day).

The language issue has so far limited its release in North America . . .

BigBella pretty much covered US availability. I got mine direct from Thomas (I met him a few years back and he and I have stayed in touch) and the price was more than reasonable.

And, like Bella, I give this book a very high recommendation. It is an absolute for your collection if you are serious about having a definitive CP book collection. It is simply the most photographically beautiful book on CPs you will find.
