Nepenthes attenboroughii seeds germinated!

  • #61
It's great to see members who received seeds getting germination. Looking forward to seeing updates and hearing from the others.

I have not seen any germination, so far. I had to leave town before the seed arrived, and they sat in the envelope for 10 days. I have had success many times before,
so I'm still hopeful. Congrats to the other growers in this thread.

Thanks for the update. At what temp are you keeping the seeds and when were they sown?

Quick update on mine

i moved half the seeds to my home terrarium its about ten or more degrees higher day and night lets see what happens, i am seeing some green on one of the seeds but i cant tell for sure if its the seed opening or not , ill update in a few days.
my luck its probably the sphag reviving , though it was dead dried sphag and o baked all media at 475 degrees in the oven for 30 min.

Good luck, upwhiz!

I went to look at the N. attenboroughii seeds in TC and I see this almost 4 weeks after first signs of germination in compost. :boogie:

A bit off topic but my N. lowii (TrusMadi) also germinated in vitro about 2 weeks after the ones in compost.

do you think the in vitro sprouts will speed past the ones in compost? growth rate is accelerated in culture, right?

  • #68
I would assume so since they are in nutrient rich media and less prone to bacterial/fungal infections. I'm a TC noob so I'll wait for more experienced members to confirm.

Just spotted some germination on mine!! 24 hours after checking the seeds and almost half of them have green bulges or sprouts. Exactly a month from the sowing date.

I have lowered the temp to 76F and sprayed the sprouts with a solution of 1/8 strength Maxsea and a drop of Superthrive.

Looking good Don! Mine are just starting to work on their first true leaves. How come you sprayed the plants already? I cant imagine that their root systems are developed enough to absorb the nutrients. Unless you are using it as a foliar spray?

  • #75
I mist them lightly to foliar feed. I figure with their first pitchers out, they should get some nutrients. It's been almost a week and I have not seen any signs of leaf burn.

ah nice, I have some seaweed fertilizer so when the seedlings make their first true leaves I'll try it out. They seem to be growing very quickly. They look promising!

When everyone was having trouble keeping their attenboroughii seedlings alive in 2007/2008, I recall Sockhom fertilized his as soon as the first traps appeared to help them along. He did not mention how he did it though.

I think those seeds were bad or old causing people to have issues with them. I can imagine a small amount of seaweed fertilizer would be a good booster, I gave my larger dubia seedlings some seaweed ferts a little while ago but it hasn't been long enough for any improvement to show. They have been growing very slowly for the past 7 months. I also have some nigra seedlings which I will try ferting as well, hopefully we will see some fast growth from them.

I have a total of 7 germinated and 3 of them have left the seed shells! I left the pot in about an inch of standing water while I was away in Spain and they seem to have liked it.
