If you have young plants with leggy stems would it be ok to just shorten the stem, dip in rooting hormone and plant? Maybe place in 90 percent humidity until it roots?
I've gone both routes with success; though, taking a cutting; adding rooting hormone; wrapping it in sphagnum moss; and sticking it in a ziplock bag for a few weeks takes far less effort . . .
That is the way I will go then. My alata had several off shoots several months ago that hadn't rooted yet so I removed and potted them with a Pepsi bottle fit over the top and within three weeks had a decent ball of roots.
