That is the best advice I can give to anyone who would like to learn and understand for themselves. My graduate students say the same about their specialty until I ask about these generalities they purportedly understand.

    Sarah,
I have posted a few photos on my blog to illustrate the relative maturity of a plant appropriate for propagation and show how much of the stem you might want to use for a cutting. See: http://nitrogenseekers.wordpress.com...stem-cuttings/

I have used both the water method and more traditional soil/moss methods for rooting cuttings, and I have found that it takes at least twice as long to root cuttings in water as it does if I place the cutting in Sphagnum. Just FYI.

Wow guys, thanks for all the help. Maybe in a couple years some of my cuttings will end up on here in giveaways as a result!
Come to me flies and crawling bugs. This plant wants to give you great big hugs
    Aren't I pretty, don't I smell good? I'd come to you if I could
But I can't so you must come to me, I'm sure we will get along splendidly

Gracilis is the only nepenthes I can root in water with any real success. But then, you could probably root gracilis in rubbing alcohol.

Oh, I don't plan on rooting in water, I will be rooting in growing medium.

I have done that as well, with about the same success rate as water. In my experience, the water method gets more strikes than direct media. However, transitioning from water to media doesn't always work. For me, at least, the net result is ~the same.

Did you use any rooting powder? Because I am going to use that too.
