Aclimating Nepenthes

I know I am supposed to be a Nep guy but I want some of your opinions/expierence/suggestions. I want to acclimate my N.Truncata to my household humidity. I would like to knwo how anyone that has acclimated a Nep to thier house how did they do it and how long did it take? My house's humidity is always a 60-70% as I have 2 humidifiers running constanly. THe Ultrasonic and Cool mist one. Thanks for all your help!

Personally I like going with the gradually decreasing humidity method! Fancy eh?

IE... open the bag up a little and leave it like that. Or poke a few holes in. Every few days or so add another hole/open it slightly more. After a few weeks it is probably safe to remove it, but you should still keep a close eye on it for a day or two after you do.

Tony

yea, like tony said, if its in a bag, make the air it gets from your house's hole bigger and bigger every about... five or six days.

If its in a terrarim, remove the lid in the same manner.

Don't you leave you Neps out of the bag during the day? They should already be pretty comfortable with your houses humidity by now, 60-70% seems high for a house! I used to grow all my plants on windowsill and my house is really dry, don't have accurate numbers but my fish tank needs to be filled with 2 gallons of water every 3 or 4 days! So i'm pretty sure it's low. ') My neps grew about half the speed with smaller pitchers for a year, they could've been so much more if I always kept em' nice and humid.

Hmm......well if Truncata won't pitcher every leave or makes tiny ones maby I won't do it. Tony, I recall you having a Truncata in your house, what sized pitchers did it make and how fast and on every leave? Thanks.

Pitcher size is not totally compareable since the plant is bigger now it is making bigger pitchers. The more important question is that they did increase in size while on my windowsill. However they did not always pitcher with every leaf. Particularly in the winter. I am guessing it was humidity but could have also been a combination of factors since the location it was in would get quite cool at night. It did not seem to mind it though and increased in size at a steady rate.

If I recall... only the two newest pitchers were formed in the Ghouse since the plant was placed in there late fall last year.

Hmm....Ok here's a question for you Tony. Will the Truncata get bigger in my G-house faster and be healthyier or will it be different in my house? I think I'll go for ther GH but want your opinion.

I would say it depends which would give it the more ideal conditions on a steady basis.

Ideal being fairly warm, bright, somewhat moist and well feed. If you run your greenhouse as a strict ultra highland house. It might grow faster in the house. I think in our area of the country the growing conditions during the late fall/winter/early spring will make the difference. Since those are typically the cool, dreary, dry months
Tony

N. truncata should adjust quite quickly to your humidity if it is 60-70 percent as you claim. N. truncata has thick leaves and stems and does not require as thick a humidity as you might think. It is not like thinner leafed varieties such as mirabilis that enjoy higher humidity. Good luck.

I agree with Kim. Your humidity is high enough, and with warmth, truncata should grow just fine. I'm going to have one on my windowsill by Friday. I'll tell all of you how it goes.

OK everyone, I think I'll give it a go and if I am not satisfied with it's growth rate, pitcher productivity, etc. I can ALWAYS put it in the greenhouse. OK so what should I do now? Open the bag a little now? Also should i mist it or direct the Ultrasonic humidifier at it as I always have that running. Even in the summer. Thanks! And according to the weather panel by my grow area it is reading in at 65% and the house humidity is 62% so not much or a huge difference. So it should do well with that humidity, well I see why as Truncata is know to do well with lower humidity. OK after that paragraph has been answered.

Can N.Maxima do well with my humidity and grow with Truncata? Thank You!

N. maxima should also do fine with that humidity.

Great! OK so will it grow as well as it did in the bag? Also what do I do now? I wanna go step by step please.

Thanks!

I've heard( from websites and the Savage Garden) that maxima does great on windowsills.  Though, all nepenthes will grow "FASTER" in optimum conditions.  Its just that some do better in less favorable conditions than others.  Where are you going to get a maxima from?

OK here's what i did, i totally removed the bag and angled the Ultrasonic humidifier nozzle on it/at it and water condenses on the leaves even in room air! Sound good?
