NG,

Why is your name 'Nepenthes gracilis' if you are a highland expert and specialist, lol?
Do you have any pics of your rajah? I would like to see what it looks like growing in live sphagnum. Of the highlanders that grow on ultrabasic soil, this one is the most unlikely for that compost, from what I have been told. A rocky substrate is supposedly very suitable.
I don't grow ultra highlanders myself, so this is just what I have picked up from others. Otherwise, growing in live sphagnum is great for high humidity plants(tentaculata supposedly really loves it).
Would love to see a pic of rajah for comparison. So many people have different favorite composts, it seems there is no basic recipe for these plants. It depend on your growing conditions.
George :How do you e-mail purple sundew for live sphagnum?

Regards,

Joe

Spectabilis 23, how long have you been growing it out in the open? If it's been growing well (not declining in health) there for a while, then I might let it stay there as an experiment to see if N. raja can be grown as a houseplant (ok, here comes the hammer ).

Bam! Shame on you Nate! Such a rare plant needs love and kisses! That's right kiss it! j/k lol.

HI George, well your plant is still tiny but the pticher should be big enough to fit the little sidewalk ants in.

Hey Griffin, my name? Well just punched it in b/c when I first started out I loved N.Gracilis. I have my Rajah in pure living sphagnum b/c it lets roots through it easily and provides like you said extra high humidity for superb pitcher formation and growth. I have never fertilized my plant and have had it for 10 months now. It is 7 inches in diamter with 1 and a half inch tall pitchers reddish-purplish in color. I can get pictures up soon, but this week is a bit booked. I will try ASAP!

heck i would try it if i knew for shore i was going to get a replacement if it died but, until then no way in heck am i going to even think of it.
i let mine go for a week with no light or humidity and it did ok. but, when they are young they do ok it is when they get older is when they actually need the cold at night.

well i guess i could feed it if i used twessers

N.G., wow what an operation to get a little ant into a trap of a baby rajah. 15 min. pair of twessers, and alot of stuffing it down the pitcher do to the ant was all mushy and the legs didn't want to go all the way in. there is maybe a 1/8 of an inch gap between lid and pitcher lip.

Okay.. bring your plants over to my house, all of them! You want ants, I have ants! Free food for everyone!

Seriously though my 'dear delightful darling' daughter (can you smell the sarcasim?) apparantly got it into her head that under the couch was a good place to store cookie bits, tonight I noticed a trail (formed into what looked like a solid line) of tiny sugar ants leading from the electrical socket down the wall and under the couch. We moved the couch and there were about 12 half eaten frosted animal crackers under there.

I have a sinking suspicion that now the ants are here we will never get rid of them oh well, I will never be short of plant food will I? Anyone know an easier way of catching them than tweezers?

Maybe I'll set out little containers of sugar, box them up and send them to everyone here. Start "meals on wheels for the carnivourus plant!" It will become an empire and one day I will rule the world!! Come, join me, be my slaves! HA HA HA HA HA!

Or maybe I will just call it a day and call the exterminator tomorrow...
I typo, therefore I edit.
