heres the new pitcher:

How does it look?

Spec, the new leaf that is coming out of it what color is the pitcher. also you might want to keep it more humid around it. actually it sould have water sitting on the leaves due to the high humidity. also put some l/f moss on top of the mix to grow.
if ya want to get some fresh moss message purplesundew and see what she will work out with ya she has a field of the stuff behind her.

the one with the black tip is full grown. the tip of the other one is a reddish-green

ok it sound ok then. just hard to tell w/ the picture due to the flash from it. just keep it humidity as high as you can it really enjoys the water from the humidity sitting on its leaves. if you show it some TLC it will put out some pretty pitchers. and don't worry about that one that is drying up eather but, i wouldn't cut it off eather for a while.

I think Nepenthes Gracillis would choke on bile if he saw you were keeping it out in the open like that!

Give that sucker some humidy, and cool nights!

I think he will, too: Here goes...

*tensely awaiting choking sounds about to come from NG*

What's going on here! (Chokes on bile and tonight's dinner)

Rajah appreciates very high humidity espeically at night, needs near 80% plus. What are the temps your getting for it? Little info for you:

Temps- Day under 85F Night 50-55F ideal.
Light- very bright for pitcher coloration and good growth
Soil- I use pure living sphagnum, looks like you got it in rocky substrate mixture. That ok but make sure the rocks were well washed and NOT calcium inhibited rocks. (no limestone or sedimentary rocks).
Water- Rajah seems to be picky and therefore appreacites pure water in cultivation (distilled or RO water is best) rainwater would be acceptable for a while.
Humidity- above 80% for best growth and pitcher production, your plant is still quite young and keeping humidity high will keep it healthy so it eastablishes good and becomes a larger healthier plant.
And feeding- rajah does best with those tiny ants on the sidwalk and the pinhead sized crickets from a petshop are also excellent.

That's about it the temp, humidity, and water are probably the MOST important of all. I am surprized you didn't research this plant before you ordered it, I thought you did!

ROFLMAO w/ the beating

N.Grac how in the heck do you fit a small ant in the pitcher. i would break the lid off of it just trying to get one in there. i do know it is eating thu. seeing small knats flying around it and today while i was checking on it one of them crawled in its pitcher

NG,

Why is your name 'Nepenthes gracilis' if you are a highland expert and specialist, lol?
Do you have any pics of your rajah? I would like to see what it looks like growing in live sphagnum. Of the highlanders that grow on ultrabasic soil, this one is the most unlikely for that compost, from what I have been told. A rocky substrate is supposedly very suitable.
I don't grow ultra highlanders myself, so this is just what I have picked up from others. Otherwise, growing in live sphagnum is great for high humidity plants(tentaculata supposedly really loves it).
Would love to see a pic of rajah for comparison. So many people have different favorite composts, it seems there is no basic recipe for these plants. It depend on your growing conditions.
George :How do you e-mail purple sundew for live sphagnum?

Regards,

Joe

Spectabilis 23, how long have you been growing it out in the open? If it's been growing well (not declining in health) there for a while, then I might let it stay there as an experiment to see if N. raja can be grown as a houseplant (ok, here comes the hammer

Bam!

Shame on you Nate! Such a rare plant needs love and kisses! That's right kiss it! j/k lol.

HI George, well your plant is still tiny but the pticher should be big enough to fit the little sidewalk ants in.

Hey Griffin, my name? Well just punched it in b/c when I first started out I loved N.Gracilis.
smile.gif
I have my Rajah in pure living sphagnum b/c it lets roots through it easily and provides like you said extra high humidity for superb pitcher formation and growth. I have never fertilized my plant and have had it for 10 months now. It is 7 inches in diamter with 1 and a half inch tall pitchers reddish-purplish in color. I can get pictures up soon, but this week is a bit booked. I will try ASAP!

heck i would try it if i knew for shore i was going to get a replacement if it died but, until then no way in heck am i going to even think of it.
i let mine go for a week with no light or humidity and it did ok. but, when they are young they do ok it is when they get older is when they actually need the cold at night.

well i guess i could feed it if i used twessers

N.G., wow what an operation to get a little ant into a trap of a baby rajah. 15 min. pair of twessers, and alot of stuffing it down the pitcher do to the ant was all mushy and the legs didn't want to go all the way in. there is maybe a 1/8 of an inch gap between lid and pitcher lip.

Okay.. bring your plants over to my house, all of them! You want ants, I have ants! Free food for everyone!

Seriously though my 'dear delightful darling' daughter (can you smell the sarcasim?) apparantly got it into her head that under the couch was a good place to store cookie bits, tonight I noticed a trail (formed into what looked like a solid line) of tiny sugar ants leading from the electrical socket down the wall and under the couch. We moved the couch and there were about 12 half eaten frosted animal crackers under there.

I have a sinking suspicion that now the ants are here we will never get rid of them
mad.gif
oh well, I will never be short of plant food will I? Anyone know an easier way of catching them than tweezers?

Maybe I'll set out little containers of sugar, box them up and send them to everyone here. Start "meals on wheels for the carnivourus plant!" It will become an empire and one day I will rule the world!! Come, join me, be my slaves! HA HA HA HA HA!

Or maybe I will just call it a day and call the exterminator tomorrow...

no i cought the darn thing w/ my fingers then because the traps are so small i had to use tweezers to put it in the trap.

you should get a N. Bacal. for your ant problem or just buy a can of raid.

i'll pass on the ant for the meal on wheels. got enought bugs and animals running around here to feed the plants.

See, it's posts like my last one that tell me I really shouldn't be allowed near the computer when I'm tired.. lol

  • #19
If people are more concerned about feeding a rajah at this stage rather than looks, I would recommend cutting the lid off to feed small insects. It will allow easy access to the pitcher and the pitcher will still function as a carnivorous appendage.

Joe
