Well its happened, my biggest Nepenthes, N. truncata is sending up a flower spike...this should be interesting! the plant is over 2 feet in diameter so i wonder how big the spike will become, I'd better watch the greenhouse poly or it might pop through it! I will keep everyone updated here on the gender of it and how this spike comes along.

I hope you can get some pollen or find a female flower, truncata makes interesting hybrids.

My truncata is still a baby. Some day it will eat pinkies. I would love to have a veitchiixtruncata, thats a bad a$$ cross. I love the oversized pitchers that are dangerous to chihuahuas and children. How long does the pollen keep? I've also heard that Neps get extremely long spikes, just how long?

Hi all:

for hybrids, i would prefer a N. lowii X truncata or a N. hamata X truncata. The hybrids are superb.

I can measure the vine Joseph.

Superimposedhope, the spikes get extremely tall on N. truncata as I have seen in person. And luckily my taking a picture of a picture worked wuite well, since I don't have my scanner hooked up, so here we go.

Mike Catalani's CP Jungle

Mike and his female N. truncata. Notice how tall the spike is in this photo and the second photo. It is nearly to the top of the greenhouse, and I belive his was around 8 or 10 feet tall, so subtract the ghouse heigth..from the bench height around 3 feet and you get around a tough estimate of 5 feet. So it was purty tall.

Me, intently looking at something rare on a bench probably and Mike cutting some dead leaves off of something I purchased.

Hey there N. gracilis
We have our 4 big (3' diameter) truncatas (2 male, 2 female) sending up flower spikes again, at the Frederik Meijer Gardens. From what I remember, each spike was at least 4 to 5 feet tall last year. Careful with the pollen (if it's a male), it can give off a stench! If it's female, go crazy and find some aristolochioides pollen or something . Here's a reminder that we're currently looking for some Nep pollen, preferably of N. aristolochioides, N. hamata (not probable), N. macrophylla, and so on. Tha really beautiful highland species. You get the idea. Good growing everyone!

Heres the specs on the vine.

The stem on it is 13 inches long and 2 inches wide (34 cm by 5 cm)

Anything else?
