N. lowii in bloom!

I am happy to announce that another of my N. lowii is in bloom, and even more exciting is the fact that it is a female!  This plant is from G. Mulu, a bit less common than the variety from G. Trus Madi.

Currently, the inflorescence is growing out, and no flowers have yet opened.  However, I would like to solicit pollen from other growers now for a share of any seeds produced.  This represents a fairly uncommon opportunity to produce some interesting hybrids....

Hope to hear from some of you soon!

Congrats Neps. It's such a rare sight to see one esp on a N. Lowii.

I wonder if anyone has N. Hamata pollen?

That's great Neps... but... must have photos!

If you can that is.

Aaron.

Congrats! Ohh....N.lowii x hamata that would be nice if it works out like I`m thinking.....or maybe crossed with aristocholoides?

If anyone had an N. lowii of similar origin that would be first priority though.

Nice one Jeff

We'll have a list of available pollen from the highlands available by Wednesday and can send it to you by express mail. I think we have fresh polen at the moment of:

N. densiflora
N. spectabilis - giant
N. aristolochioides (definitely)
N. ventricosa
N. copelandii

and maybe some others. Guess you will have other offers too!

Congratulations Neps!

Might check the International Pollen Agency at the top of the nep forum, too, if you haven't already.

Thanks to everyone for your congratulations, offers of pollen,
etc. Just contact me privately if you wish to offer pollen.

And, as has been pointed out already, I would really like to
get some N. lowii pollen, if anyone has some. One of my male
N. lowiis bloomed earlier this year and I still have some of the
pollen. I intend to use it, but would prefer to have some that
is fresher.... Interestingly, the pollen I have comes from the
G. Trus Madi variety, so crossing it with my female from G. Mulu
might be intriguing. In particular, I wonder if the fact that
these two plants are from distinctly different populations would
yield offspring which would grow more vigorously than plants
from either location (sort of a muted "hybrid vigor", as it were).
Hopefully, the opportunity to test this hypothesis will present
itself.

Jeff, the hybrid vigour issue you raised is something I've been pondering myself. I'm not sure how much difference there would be, the equivalent example would be crosses of different veitchii variants. I have seen various intra-species of veitchii, and they don't seem much more vigorous than the parent varieties.

/me starts laughing.

This is not what it looks like Chesera. My Miranda is not cheating on your Emmarene!

I assume one male produces more than enough pollen for several females right?

Just a quick update:

Flowers are open now. I've begun pollenation, and
will try to post a picture of the plant showing
flowers soon.  If anyone has any fresh N. lowii
pollen, now's the time to speak up!

I have an N. diatas coming into flower (spike is still in new leaf) and I believe it will be female!!!

Since an image of the flowering plant was requested some time
ago, I've taken a couple of images. The first shows the entire
plant, and unfortunately, the depth of field is pretty poor so the
inflorescence is out of focus.

The second image is a close-up shot of the flowers. As one can
see, the pedicels are very short. The resulting proximity of the
flowers makes it difficult to pollenate them.... Also, note the
appearance of small structures on the sepals, near the flowers
proper.

As of the present time, I have applied pollen of the following
species: lowii, aristolochioides, hamata, truncata, boschiana.
In particular, I am hopeful that my lowii pollen is still viable,
for it is from the G. Trusmadi variety of N. lowii, while the
female is from G. Mulu.

As an aside, I should mention that the smell of N. lowii flowers
is, in my experience, somewhat different from the scent of
other species, both male and female. Usually, most nep flowers
remind me of some very stiff gym socks. However, N. lowii
flowers are much less offensive. In fact, they are vaguely
redolent of spices, having an odd pepperly smell, at least to
my nose, and are quite unique in this regard.

Compact indeed. I like it more than my Miranda flower which has it's flowers more widespread.

No problem!  The plant is about six years old.  It has grown rather rapidly in the last few years.
