Hey, I have some of Tony's hybrids, too.

My specxspath is actually unhappy for some reason. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong - most of the other highlanders seem happy. It's all wilted and withered.

I recently aquired the spec x vent, which is just about settled in. Looks like it will start to pitcher soon. Can't wait! Love the pics I've seen of them.

Then there's the big mamma - trunc x vent. Went through a not-so-happy period when we had a heat wave ALL SUMMER, but now.....oooooooo! Recently openned a pitcher that it is, oh, 8" or 9" tall. Beautiful striping....the whole nine!

My new spectxspath has its pitchers drying up. I thought it was just travel shock and adjusting to a new environment + age of the pitchers, but maybe this hybrid is pickier than others? All the other new plants are doing fine, no pitchers drying at all.

Pitchers drying is one thing. The N. spathulata x spectabilis has fairly thin walled pitchers. If the plant is wilting and drying like Dave's sounds like then there is a problem.

Dave,
If the leaves are wilting and drying the plant is not getting enough water. Usually means two things if it is a persistant problem and is getting worse and worse over time. Either the mix is dry so there is no water to absorb. Or the mix is moist but the roots are gone, so the plant has nothing to take in water with.

Tony
Is that a Nepenthes in your pocket or you just happy to see me?

Hey guys. Quick note on spath x spec. I got one from Tony a couple years ago. here's the secret.
I never water it! I ignore it completely! The soil is completely bone dry! Nothing could possibly grow in those conditions. It's probably 5' tall with basal shoots, and node shoots. It's freaking out!

my 2 cents.

Tony,
My plant looks fine. I wasn't really alarmed that the pitchers were drying out, just commenting that since it is the only one that happened to, maybe it is a little more fussy than the other. The thinner pitcher walls explains it very well. I'm still loving my new plants!!!

Robin,
Surely it must get water from somewhere, or are you suggesting I grow mine like a cactus too. I'll try to water it less. And you ignore it completely. No, "Good evening, it's nice to see you again", or "My, you look lovely tonight".

Hehe!
yep ignore it completely! no nice words, no sympathy! I may water it if I remember every 2 weeks or so. When I do you can see dust puff up from the soil being so dry. It's outgrowing my chamber! I'm gonna chop it in half. Should really take off then! not all neps apprecciate this kind of treatment. most of my neps are pampered and spoon fed.
