Where have all the subulata gone...

4 years ago, among other things, Sarraceniaobcessed was offering seeds of U. subulata. Being new to CP's I asked for some. To which I was warned to keep them as far as possible away from other CP's and that I probably have them in my collection without realizing it. Ya know... he was right. I had them in with some of my pygmy sundew pots.

A friend was asking me if I still had them in my pots. I hadn't paid attention to them in awhile and to my surprise, they were gone. I don't know why. Maybe they froze to death?

Don't laugh but I kinda miss the yellow flowers. They remind me of dandelions!

Dude that's like asking, "Where did that steak knife that was in my forehead the other day ?" They are gone so don't ask !

Aw, sorry to hear that. IMO, even if it's a weed, I would've enjoyed it.

Ohhhh... they're not that bad. :0o: Notice I'm not begging for replacements...

I like them. Except when they don't flower.

Jim, I think they snuck out of your house and moved into mine. I have several pots that have suddenly started sprouting short, narrow leaves in the soil. They're even in pots that I don't think were anywhere near my Utrics.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Nice flowers when you see them, but what a ripoff when you see brown stalks and get nothing else but pods. :-(

I've got some of that species - I've got three little bushes of it - 'planned' ones, that I grew from seed because I didn't have it my collection. And I needed hardly any of the seed - still got like half of left! Lol how could you have killed it? Maybe the colony just ran out of vigor from self-pollinating and died?

How could I have killed it? I neither encouraged them nor discouraged the, LOL! It was all their volition. OTOH. a colony of P. lusitanica that I thought had died out, has one plant growing in a U. calcyfida pot. Just noticed it on Friday.

Ha-ha, mass carnivorous plant suicide. I wonder what you did to them to make them want to give up the ghost? Did you starve them or somthing :)

I have no idea. Oh wait... I have a thought.. perhaps they froze to death, while the pygmy sundews endured the frost?

Hehehe, you mean like this? Never saw a flower but got a few pods. Must watch these few bubs really closely.

So just pull off the stalks after they flower. I do that every year to keep things looking 'clean'. I do like the little leaves littering the ground everywhere.

Right... well what on earth germinated in my pot then!!!!
I was looking at U. Subulata photos, and there's no way what I've got is U. Subulata... whatever it is, it germinated from my u. subulata seeds, but it doesn't look like a subulata.. what on earth is it?

..... and give them to people you don't like!

They're still there - just hiding. They'll still be there after the nuclear holocaust hits. :0o: ... doing this ... :-P-:

I always liked my U. subulata, especially the noncleistogamous variety. Seems like an indicator of good housekeeping. Not to worry Jim, a light frost wouldn't trouble this species and it's just about a sure bet it will be back.

I've read that Utrics appreciate re-potting - presumably with new media - however subulata has never been a problem for me. They grow freely EVERYWHERE and yes... after they die you're left with drab little brown stalks everywhere, but they pull out easily and I would rather see their little green leaves hugging the ground everywhere than just plain moss or worse yet: nothing at all.
