New to Carnivorous plants

  • #22
Welcome to the forums! great looking plants!

we aren't that bad....lol

Don't let them scare you off ;). You can very easily have a good size collection without investing incredible amounts of money (especially with the people and resources on this forum). They are referring to some of the more advanced stages of this infection we call cp collecting. The most expensive parts of the hobby are usually ordering super rare plants and the components (terrariums, greenhouses, fans, heaters, coolers...) to care for them.

Welcome to the hobby!

Thanks I won't be investing any cheese like that for a few years I'm still in an apartment.

I got these 2 Death Cube VFTs from lowes they didn't have any traps just green leaves. I think I might have been successful in saving the little guys. They're planted in 80% LFS and 20% perlite. They both are showing signs of new growth coming from the center

LFS is usually too dense for VFT's, a mix with peat and perlite would likely be better for them in the long run.

Yeah I'm gonna replant all of them either in the fall or next spring. That'll give me time to get something better than miracle grow crap

Hey, hows it going. I told you that the Miracle Grow stuff would not be good for them and that you would need to change them out. No matter how much you rinse the Miracle Grow it will still cause harm to the plants. Do not wait too much longer.

Hey I'm planning on ordering the peat you sent me the amazon link to Friday. I'm gonna try silica sand too in a 50:50 mix I'm thinking about replanting my Filiformis too. It has like 7 growth point and I think it may be crowded in its pot

I see you live in Charlotte as well? It would be cool to see you sometime. I could jump-start your collection as well.

The 50:50, peat : silica sand is a good go-to mix for CPs, I approve! It definitely helps keep my Sarracenia planted. If you ever need cheap peat go to your local home improvement store. I was able to get 3 cubic feet of fertilizer-free peat moss for $10! Granted it's got a decent amount of debris, I just sift through it. For the price it can't be beat :)

I love your plants, KKP! I've always liked Drosera filiformis.
And yes, I too have money invested in my plants, about one hundred ten dollars (US) if each pot sold for ten dollars. Of course, a few probably WOULD sell for more than ten dollars, so I most likely have more.

Thanks man I'm loving this new hobby. I found myself at a local gardening center earlier today (Sunday) I found some additive free peat and as I'm checking out I see a couple of VFTs in death cubes that looked well taken care of and I dug through the collection and and found a decent looking Sarra. Who could resist buying plants found in death cubes that are in good condition. Ill post pictures up soon

It's storming here all night so I'm going to let Mother Nature flush my pots. I put all of my pots on the back of my car so they get full exposure to the rain. Plus I get to collect some rain water! I repotted my VFTs in 50:50 peat and silica sand I bought another VFT today that had some pretty nice sized traps. When I was washing the old soil off of them I ended up finding that there were 2 separate plants growing #WIN!!!!!

The Sarr in with the Daina's Delight is a purpurea venosa or a purpurea hybrid. You will get a better idea once it settles in and starts perking up. The collection is looking nice, but I can tell that you are not done by a long shot. LOL Denial is the first stage of addiction.
