VFT DNA and Revertion...

Hi. After having a conversation with my pal Tim, we ended up with this despute over VFT's.


You guys have heard of a Red Dragon VFt losing its red coloration when not enough light is provided right? Well, is it true when that happens, the plant becomes a "typical" form? Its true that the Red Dragon was a mutation and still has its genes of the typicla form, but is it possible for it to toatlly become a typical again? thanks-Zach

ahh tricky question...(there are actually a couple very different questions your asking about)

Is it now a typical because it isn't red like it should be if grown in low light? No
Simply because when givin proper growing conditions the red will manifest itself again. Whereas a typical in the same growing environment will not show red coloration to the same extent.

As for your other question:
Is it possible for a red dragon to become typical again? Yes
HOWEVER this would require a genetic mutation so the plant loses the ability to turn totally red. Odds of this happening are worse than winning the lottery. Giving a red dragon low light so that it looks like a typical does not cause it's genetic makeup to be altered.

but sarracennia.com said they may revert back to a typical like form, with only greens specks.

A 'red dragon' is a red dragon because its genes "tells" it it is, you can't change that by a color change. Ex. a snowey owl is still a snowey owl in summer even though it turns brown. Just my opinion.
