Waking up early.

Hey everyone. I was wondering is it too early to get the VFT's out of thier beds for a head start on growing? Or is it way too early?

Mine are coming out already naturally here in so. CA but you can wait another month if you want. Since when have they been dormant?

Noah

NG,

VFT's generally need a dormancy of 2 to 3 months. If the plants went into dormancy 2 or so months ago then you can 'wake them up'.

I put them into dormancy at ThanksGiving day.

You can take them out of dormancy someday at the beginning of Feb.

OK Thanks CP2K. I am no dormancy expert but I do know how to grow VFT'S.

Thanks.

hey lil budd...

I would take them out on Valentines day!

Soo your saying is give em a big ole Valentines Surprize!!

May I also ask who is "lil budd" And also Ram. Are you or any other people mad at me for the commercailly adavertizing I did on accident??? I didn't mean to type my business name in!! I meant to say coming soon my new bussiness and how does the name sound. That's all I wanted to say. But it is all cleared up now,I talked wiht Phil about the mistake I did.

I don't think i ever saw your advertising lol but i would really be interested to see how your flytraps in the fridge go as opposed to the one you are letting go dormant naturally...it will be interesting to see which go better hey?As far as dormancy is concerened i have heard of people who only put their plants in the fridge for 6 weeks, some 2 months, and some 3 and some 4....i don't know what u should do in that respect.

I am excited! I also am curious. I think the potted will come out better. What does anyone else theink? Pooted or Refridgerated?

hmmm... well, no I am not mad... as far as the other topic, I just ran out of things to say! Let's just leave it at that, and talk about CP's here!

I was calling you lil bud (To kinda make you feel a a little better!

)

As far as which plant will do better?

I am betting on the one in the fridge!

Here is why:

Dormancy is DEEP, so deep, photosynthesis is no longer required while in dormancy, and the plant get's a rest so deep it can't help but be refreshed.

also, when it's brought out, it get's brand new soil, with high acidity, and the benefit of another years larning it's owner got...

It has been sprayed with fungicide, reducing the amount of predation that might occur on from fungus, and will probably get a dip in super thrive to aid it in re-rooting.

BTW, I think the little buggers are so cold, they won't even know they have been messed with in terms of un-potting...

All speculation though!

Hey Ram. Thanks for making me feel better!

Well I think either way is fine as long as you know what you are doing in dormancy procedures and techniques.

Is photosynthesis not required because of the low temperature? If I recall the minimum temperature for photosynthesis is 6 degrees C.

I believe I read it in savage Garden, though I can't recall, that light is not required for plants put into dormancy in a refrigeration unit, because the dormancy is so deep, they either dont photosynthesize, or have no need to.

Yes,Ram you are right. It says when VFT's or other CP's are given the "refridgerator treatment" they go into a very very deep sleep, ie: they no longer even need light to survive.

  • #17
However, just to through a wrench in the refrigerator, because photosynthisis stops does not mean the plant is in "suspended animation" it is still alive and surviving on stored carbohydrates which it is unable to replace due to the cold and lack of light, while the plant being wintered outside or under lights can replace a certain amount of its reserves over its dormancy but will also use more energy due to the warmer avarage temps. I would suspect that the two methods ( given excellent care otherwise) will prove to be a "6 of one and a half dozen of the other" situation. My two cents worth.;)

And if anyone is worried about their VFTs not getting enough light in the fridge(although it's not a prob), keep in mind that they get a burst of light every few hours when you open the fridge door and the light automatically flicks on! :cheesy:
Let's just not get into a discussion about how often we open our fridge doors! That could be disastrous.

Chris don't go there! It could be a large chaotic situation! But hey everyone I just noticed 2 flower buds on my VFT I left potted. Yes the experimental one! But is that abnormal to have one starting to send up stalks now?

It's weird how plants in the fridge are not affected by having no acidic soil around them...which may prove rams theory that the plants go into such a deep dormancy that they don't know they are being messed with.
Uh nep g it sounds like urs is going fine.
