My passing of RD\'s

Hey everyone my Red Dragon's have gave up the ghost.
sad.gif
Darn. It seems they need TONS of sun. It appears they rotted from the leaves inward. I think I'll try them 1 more time and if I still have the rotting problem even when I gave them good sun I'll stop growing them.

Don't give up Nepenthes Gracilis , just keep trying to grow them and if they die , you'll learn from your mistakes .

Everyone seem's to kill Red Dragon's. Why is is produced if they are small and hard to grow?

tuyen thi, you signed up like 24 hours ago and you already have 40 posts! Took me 6 months to get 15 when I started.

Blame it on too much inbreeding! The desire to make an all red flytrap by selecting darker and darker clones each generation and then crossing them together causes a reduction in vigor. This is a huge problem with many types of plants where you breed heavily for a specific trait. For example Green Dragon which is Red Dragon crossed back to a normal VFT and you get a huge jump back to vigorous plants. The next step would be to take Red Dragon and cross it back to Green Dragon. There should be alot of Red vft with better vigor than Red Dragon but probably a little less vigor than Green Dragon. The other way to go would be to cross Red Dragon with a completely different line of Red VFT.

Red dragons aren't realy all that small I have one with traps about 3/4" and if you were to measure it in diameter it's about 8" and dark reddish purple.
Sorry to hear about yours Nep G

Was it in a tank? I kept my vfts in a tank and they all took turns dying I got sick of replacing them and one day put them in a pot and they are doing fine. I also had a hard time with them growing with a sphagnum x sand mix although I'm sure others have no problems with it I for some reason struggled. I also keep the tray level down for mine if that helps you or anybody else

I have one word for Tony-Genius.

in a 12 inch pot with S.Leucophylla,S.Rubra spp. Rubra and Common and GD VFT's. I think I'll give them another shot but I am going to invest in some serious lighting ways or get my greenhouse up first them go into them again. So all of you have changed my mind to try them again!

Hi Nep,
Hope I can help. I have sort of the opposite problem, but I might have some insight. I've noticed that my Red Dragon doesn't like to be quite as soggy as my common and Green Dragon.

My plants don't get full sun because in my case they may burn (Zone 9/10/11) so they're sitting in all-day indirect light in a northern facing window.

For my common and green dragon, I keep their trays filled with loads of water so that they're sitting in it 24-7. For the Red Dragon, I put a bit less so it's in it water for about 15 hours, moist but not soggy.

I had noticed that Reds and commons's emerging traps can rot sometimes with cold/water. My red did much better with less moisture. The red is actually doing better than the 4-year old common (recently put it into hibernation) and growing traps as quickly as the Green, though the leaves are shorter.

BTW, I got the Red and Green here at Exotic Gardens!

Hmm..now that you mention it I did keep it with the other VFT's that are doing great and they didn't. Interesting......anyone care to pick up on this?

Well, if you guys ever give up on Red Dragons, Royal Red VFT's look pretty nifty...

Hi, well, sorry to say my Red Dragon isn`t long for this earth either. I cut 2 more dead traps off today, and it hasn`t shown any new growth since I got it.(from here). On the brighter side my Commons,Green Dragons and Dente(also from here) are growing very well and catching their own food. Maybe it`s still to early in the season for the Red`s. John

My one Red Dragon died also. All the other VFTs (commons and dente) did fine. The RD never produced any new traps...and finally expired. I want to try another one and would also LOVE a Royal Red.

Statik...beautiful pic!

Hey Statik2426 , Thanks on the compliment about the post , I have been getting bored so I try to ask questions and answer people questions . Where did you get that royal red vft from , How long have you've had it , and what company did you get it from .

i'd love to have a true red vft.

the only vfts i can find here are "Fang". and they rapidly lose any red they have even in full sun.

the only red i can get are by mail order and i dont have a credit card yet! lol

Hey guys , the red dragon vft's are in stock at PFT and they only cost &#367.95 is that a good price or what . Too bad the Butterworts are all out of stock . Grab your hands on a red dragon vft now or you ' ll probably never see one at a good price like PFT does .

Cross your fingers, but for the first time, all my VFT's (even red dragon) are doing good. They get about ten hours of sun( when it shines here) and have large enough( and funtioning) traps too catch their own food. Maybe I'm finally catching on. Good luck to all.

My Royal Red's traps are also starting to rot as they grow about 1" from the plant, bofore they form fully. I have now raised its level in the tray (on top of plastic thing) so that it gets less moist than my S.w.Giant and common which are doing fine in 1" of water.
