Spec I think you are misunderstanding what FTG is doing.. or I am.. From what I understand, she is not trying to get the flowers to open or set seed, she is simply trying to use a flower stalk as a "leaf cutting". I see no reason why it cant work. Its quite common in Drosera to get plantlets to sprout from all kinds of parts of the plants including flower stalks. I say go for it FTG.. drat the naysayers!! lol

    Good luck

Says you! FTG wants to try it, and we'll know if it worked for her then.

Spec, You are talking way beyond your knowledge. I have learned with all CP species to never try to put them in a "behavior box". These plants will do whatever they can do to survive. Even if it means thinking outside your behavior concept, and surviving in a situation that one may think cannot be done. Plants don't read, and have never been told they can't do something. Invariably they turn around and astound us with their audacity to survive in ways beyond our comprehension. FTG's experiment may or may not work. But the fact she is trying at all speaks volumes about her need to know and curiousity. Don't confine your plants to a set of hard and fast rules. They will fool you everytime you think you know it all. And, VFT's do form plants on the flower stalk, and sprouted seed in the pod had nothing to do with it. Nature had everything to do with it. Strange babies, our CP, but that is one of their interesting features.

d'oh... Sorry if I sounded a bit abrupt there! But if it does sprout a plantlet, the chances of the plantlet surviving are slim, form what i've heard... baby flytraps that formed on the flower stalk rarely grow when you plant them in soil...

"behavior box" I remember someone saying that last year... Did i see you at a BACPS meeting last year, with a pot with a baby VFT growing on the flower stalk?

The flower stalk could possibly work in vitro

    UPDATE - 6/3/04

Okay, I trashed the first stalk, because Spec, even though he has some serious party-pooping issues, was right, and the stalk rotted and never rooted, because it retained no petiole. So then I attained two fresh stalks from two different plants. To remove them, I gently plucked them out of the center of the plant, the rhizomes still intact and healthy, instead of snapping them off without the rhizome like I did before. I put the two about an inch apart in the same pot, and I'm growing them for my mom, because I feel the great need to pay her back for the fact that her two VFTs, which I have been keeping, recently died. I have high hoped these will in fact root. I shall keep you posted!!

I've tried this twice with cut flower stalks, and both just rotted. So, perhaps you'll get a different outcome with the plucked flower stalk =)
