Double trap

Hey, not surprizingly I found a double trap on my clone of a particular typical VFT that seems to make double traps very frequent, esp. later in the growing season, well as it approaches more and more should appear, here is the first.

That's a pretty wild mutation... it looks like the 2 outside trap halves share one inside half which is doubled back on itself. Is that what its doing or an illusion of the photo?

Steve

Wow, not your typical mutant

How often does this double trap mutaion happen?

Hey guys, here's a better photo....

Peter, yes this is not something new to me.

Wow! Wierd mutation. I dont really know what to tell you, I have seen mutations where the stalk split into 2 and there is a trap on each end, but nothing like this.

I've seen thing like this before, Wierd

No trigger hairs?? Or can I just not see them?

Good question I'll have to look! Nice catch Est!

EDIT: pic...a little oversized and a tad out of focus, but you can make out the trigger hairs....one hair is on the mutated portion!

try triggering the hair in the mutated portion and see what happens

Does the folded half work? If the main trap eats a bug, what happens to the inside portion...does it die?

Hey guys,

Hellz, this only happens once in a while, it could be easily propagated but its a more spontaneous mutation than regular...I have noted that crowed VFT plant do this mutation more frequent then solitary or spaced out plants.

VTPTFATHAVFT, I've had some other ones like 2 traps on one leaf (have to find it in my folders) and a half a trap before.

Nflytrap, I have no idea, it may bea paralyzed trap.

Ok, I could make out the hairs in the last picture you posted, does the addition have trigger hairs as well?

That's what I wanna know! It'd be cool to see how well/if the mutated trap works (well, each respective "half".  Very interesting.

----addition---

NepG, would you be so kind as to supply us with a picture of the 'addition'? Furthermore, can you tell us anything about the 'addition'; is it still growing, and other abnormalities besides the placement?

that is really funny! I have the EXACT same mutation on one of my plants! I was wondering how 'common' this was....

  • #18
yes, it has trigger hair...mine caught a bug about a week ago...

I took a small .MOV file movie and indeed it closed, but extremely slowly.
