A few exciting hybrids

Just an update on some hybrids as they develop.

emarginata x “Fake Weser” - unusual light veined plant

emarginata x “Fake Weser” - dark veined sibling. Most of the other plant are uniform dark pink.

agnata ‘Red Leaf’ x moranensis ‘Vera Paz - one now showing a flower bud; though it’s not the most interesting one, it should give an idea of what the flowers will be like.

A bunch of unidentified hybrids, many probably involving laueana.

Argh it mixed up the order of the photos. The solo pink and the six plants are the agnata red leaf x moranensis Vera Paz, the unknown lau hybrids are the half flat photo, and the agnata Zimapan x mor caudata are the pale colorful ones including the one on the rock.

I have seen flowers on some of the agnata Zimapan x mor. caudata. One is very nice pink with white and yellow center; the other was not exactly remarkable. By no means ugly but it didn’t bowl me over either. :) I’m more interested in their leaves, which have been extremely varied, but I’m open to surprises! A few are below.

Of the smaller ones, the agnata Red Leaf x moranensis Vera Paz is the only one with a bud so far. I’m hoping for a good flower on that.

Emarginata x “Fake Weser” could be very nice. I love the leaves anyway, especially the light veiny one, and hope it will preserve that characteristic. Time will tell. The flower of the Fake Weser (attached) seems a little darker than the true one and actually I like it better even though the white line is not quite so distinct. (It was sold to me as ‘Sethos’ but clearly it’s not...) So I suppose this one with a heavily veined emarginata could produce a nice flower.

You know, I don't generally consider myself someone who grows pings for their flowers. I love the subtly carnivorous leaves in all of their shapes and colors. But I really like to see flowers in photos and they tell a lot about the plant's ancestry. Thanks for the addition, Bob. Please keep up the cool efforts at hybridizing!

for my part I love their flower, which often make it possible to know about hybrids their degree of parentage, rosettes are accessory.

tastes and colors that are not discussed:adoration:

I am more about cool leaf forms/colors myself too since that is what we see most of the year, but ideally is like both the leaves and the flower to be exciting. Sometimes they surprise you...I expected a cross between agnata Red Leaf and moranensis Vera Paz (with its almost “meaty” colored leaves) to produce some really deeply colored leaves, but generics seem to have had other ideas and some of the darker ones just look a little splotchy. Then again the plants are young and still changing. But I also got some really unexpectedly beautiful colors, and that leaf variation is really fun. It’s hard to imagine that anything with Vera Paz in it would produce a boring flower but there could be surprises there too!

Yes. Especially when I try a cross and flower persists...then I try other pollen and still it persists, and try a third...and still it persists, then a week later the flower falls and it produces a pod. Agnata seems to do this a lot. Then you look at the leaves and flowers and try to figure out who the actual daddy was...;-)

I’ve been wonder if maybe P. lusitanica and villosa might hybridize and make a fertile hybrid. Not that this would be a real beauty; it interests me to hybridize and test relationships as well. What do you all reckon?

Oh, this thread! I have a few more to share now. By the way, the “Fake Weser” above was the real ‘Weser.’ It’s been a great parent in hybrids.

So here are a few more that have been making me happy just lately.

Note - the extra petals on the one, and the hooked (and sometimes forked) nectar spur on the last one are consistent traits, not one-off breaks. Hopefully they’ll also appear in plants grown from leaf pullings.
