This is also what I noted when I was using an acidic media and why I changed for a basic one. I found also that this roots were short lived and with no radicels (word ?).

The roots were not keeping the plants in the pot but with a basic aerated media, the roots go in the media and have many radicels around the volcanic rocks of the media.

For having longer roots, it is easy : only put a little water from top to bottom or in the bottom and the roots will be longer to find a "moister" media down to the pot.
