Miniature Orchids?

Just wondering if anyone out there wanted to trade some mini orchids, I'm only interested in species (no hybrids) that do well in vivariums and stay under 5" or so. The smaller the better.

I'm dividing up some stuff now so it just seemed like a good time to post. My PM box is still a bit full from the giveway so post here and I'll do the same with what I'm dividing if there seems any interest.

whatchya got? how do you go about dividing the minis? i need a breakdown of how to do so and depending on the case, i might be able to part with some divisions. all of my orchids stay at most 5 inches, the largest being Maxillaria schunkeana so we can potentially be trading buddies soon. i think swords would want in on this as well.

Dividing up orchids is more of an artform than a science. The Bulbo types are easy just cut off a section with roots and bulbs and your done.

I just divided up an Epidendrum longirepens tonight and you basically just look for the smallest stem part of the plant and SNIP with some very sharp disinfected scissors. Fire is a great disinfectant :0o:.

The Pleurothallis...well thats were the real artform starts, you have to figure out where to tear...rip...or cut, that will leave the most stems with roots still attached to them. That tearing sound is bad....Some are easier than others. I will be dividing up a Pheurothallis pruinosa this weekend and its going to be kinda stressful.

The masdies and Maxies don't like me, I've never been able to grow them well. They just kindof hang around until I feel bad for them and find them a new home.

As for what I will be/have divided up so far.

Pleurothallis pruinosa (not done)
Pleurothallis sigmoidea (not done)
Epidendrum longirepens (2 plants)
Epidendrum congestoides (3 or so smaller ones)
Lepanthopsis astrophora 'Stalky' (3 or so small keiki's)
Pleurothallis luctuosa (not done)
Cischweinfia rostrata (not done)
Bulbophyllum gamblei (1 so far, will do more)
Pleurothallis corniculata (missed spelling that right by 1 letter, I have an orchid problem..., 1 done)
Pleurothallis alata (2 done)

Probably a few more but thats a good start.

o_O that'll be interesting considering a great majority of my collection belongs to the pleurothallid alliance.

so basically, it's much better to mount your orchids on cork bark rather than the fern tree stuff because the roots end up entangled in it?

If your planning on growing them to divide you want a bark mix and pots. Otherwise thatever the orchid likes the best. Cork bark or tree fern is fun to divide.

I'm on to a Pleurothallis prolifera (potted) now and it will be easier than the last one just due to the larger stems/runners.

With the ones I have on tree fern or cork bark I generally find a section I think will be easiest to remove and snipe the connecting part then try to "unstick" the roots. It takes a while but usually works ok.

Alot of the time when I'm repotting I cut the longer roots (again with sterile scissors) to make the repotting easier, you can abuse the roots a good amount and as long as the division gets into a good envoirnment they do fine. I've went as far as 1/2" with roots and the plants recovered just fine. Of coarse the more roots the better, but...

will have to double check but i believe ive got a Pleurothallis quadrifida i could divide......

If I recall correctly, isn't that one biggish?

Here is a division nightmare :banana2:.

With luck I'll get it done this weekend, the entire pot is 1" across...and the best way to divide it is to RIP it apart :0o:.

Thats at the top of what I'm looking for. Are you growing them in med light levels? I've found that shrinks some species leaves, maybe this is one of them that happens too or I'm just wrong.

I have a Zootrophion that will grow long leaves under low light and small round leaves under medium light.

I might have small divisions of maxillaria uncata. It divided itself as it wasn't doing well for the person who gave it to me. If your interested I'll see if any of them have recovered enough to not have to be nursed anymore.

I've never been able to keep Maxilllaria's well, I would hate to have another one just holding on.

Pleurothallis alata, they have been undemanding for me in vivariums. Flowering ok but not alot, although that one has a seed pod somehow.

Next week would be better for me too. Whichever half would ship better.

What one(s) were you wanting so I can make sure to hold it/them?
