Croatan Forest

  • #41
It's a Pinguicula, but P. caerulea or lutea, I'm assuming. In the greenhouse, my P. caerulea grows shorter, fleshier leaves in the winter, although not to the same extent as a Mexican Pinguicula species would. These remain carnivorous, e.g. I have seen both species in Holly Shelter, so they are in the general vicinity of Croatan (although I've not yet seen them within the NF boundaries itself).

I have likewise seen P. pumila in Holly Shelter, so it's conceivable that the small Pings in one of the photos are that species (I wouldn't expect the larger species to be flowering at that size). I've never seen pumila growing in sphagnum (I have always found them in open sandy habitat in NC, even in tire tracks where the ground has been disturbed).

But there are plenty of things I've never seen, so that's hardly a limiting factor :).

Jay which Pinguicula picture are you referring to? I can guarantee that "Mexican pinguicula" is not a butterwort at all. P. lutea and P. caerula look nothing like that at any point in their life cycle. Also I have seen that plant in person and touched the leaves they are smooth yet sandy like a piece of sand paper coated in rubber. Also the small Pinguicula growing in the sphagnum and the blooming one is P. pumila the larger one is probably P. lutea.

Thanks for the info, guys. I was sure it wasn't caerulea or lutea, but it definitely looked like a Mexican.

Here are a few pictures from yesterday. McNair and I were out exploring the Croatan. It was about 58 degrees, Sunny, and pine pollen covering everything.

I started to think the same thing about the "Fused Tooth" VFT, but it being a mutation to start with does not exclude its existance. It is just quite a feat to find and photgraph one in the wild. At least from my vantage point here in Ca. I wish I lived near a natural habitat as such. I would probably live there amongst the Sphagnum. :)

Oh my good gracious these pictures are stunning! I know I'm late to the forums but I don't think I'll ever get tired of looking at photos like these! Thanks very much for sharing them!

Amazing pictures! I like temperate pings, but can't grow them:)

I don't really blame you for not owning any CP's. Why do that when you can go see them in the wild all the time!! You've taken wonderful pictures! Thank you for sharing them!! I can't wait to see more from you.

I think Jay and Manny are talking about beginning post, sixth pic down.

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I don't have any CP's of my own, but I am very interested in conservation of the picosin habitat in which CP's live. A few miles from where I live, the Croatan forest contains pine savannas and picosins which form the natural habitat for these plants in my area. Pine savannas once covered most of the Southeast coastal region and now, less than 3% of this habitat remains. Below is a photo of a typical savanna with longleaf pines and wire grass. This wire grass is highly flammable and CP's rely on fire to burn off competing plants and the best growth of CP's occurs the year after a fire. The U.S. Park Service does control burns on a regular basis to preserve this habitat. The pines are over 100 years old, but due to poor soil conditions they look much younger. Their trunks are blackened from fire, but they tolerate the burns well. There are also wild orchids and rare wildflowers and endangered butterfly's that grow in this environment and they also depend on fire.

In the photo below, the pine savanna borders a low picosin or swamp on the left. It is at this border or "ecotone" that most of the CP's grow. In the photo, you can see some pitcher plants (light green plants) in the distance on the left, just at the border of the picosin.

Below are photos of some of the plants I have found in this region. Enjoy! Hopefully more photos to come.

It's been awhile since I posted anything. I'm continuing to explore the Croatan at least once a week and I'm finding new and beautiful plants!

Here are some photos I've taken over the past several months in the Croatan.

excellent photos as always! I especially love that "Drosera capilaris, Pinguicula pumila, Dionaea miscipula" photo! so cool to see them all together like that

  • #52
I've noticed that the Pinguicula pumila and cerulea grow best during the winter out in the Croatan. Winter temps are 40-60 degrees. Sometimes in the 30's. During the summer, they are smaller and not easy to find.

This is kind of funny.
My wife and I decided to go somewhere different for a get away next month. We decided to go to Atlantic Beach, NC.
Looking at the map I notice a large green park system nearby....... Croatan Forest. I know where I'm going hiking and kayaking...

  • #54
Here's some pics from my visit to a CP site in Croatan:

Out kayaking in Great Lake:

Wife and I went bike riding in Croatan and noticed shell fossils laying around:

  • #55
As many times as I've been down there I've never seen that lake. Where were the rubras? The only site that I can think of got plowed over and dried out.

  • #56
Graham I havn't really explored around great lake much, so i wouldn't be surprised if there are a few populations of things around there that we havn't seen yet

  • #57
We need to go!!!

amazing pictures man !

I haven't posted in a while so I thought I would upload a few photos from the Croatan.
