What kind of light do these need for a 20 long? I really don't want it to be too bright because this is a black piranha. There is going to be driftwood, maybe sand for the substrate, blackwater extract for the amazon color, powerhead for the current. I was wondering if I should go fake plants or real.

Real plants are fun,I have a 10 gallon with some they do great.
For lighting I'd suggest cheaper T5 or strip lighting.
If you do keep them you have some work like some fertilization. I've been using an untested methode(well I'm using it) Hydroponics nutrient by PRO grow but your better off using Seachems line of products like flourish.
You could try a river sand and some larger rocks (river rock that evenutally has a yellow hint to it). Unfortunatly(for you) the river rock(in my experience) and sand(I don't know about sand) buffer the ph up to 7.0 and I'm assuming you want a lower Ph with soft water.
