Filters penn-plax or hagen fluval

Hi,

Will the water be deep enough for the siphon to work? As far as brands, I would recomment Eheim. You might look at the internal underwater canister filters Eheim makes.

cool. i looked it up and it looks a great deal like the penn plax. do you have one? does the water flow mean much? the hagen is 340 gph, the penn plax is 265gph, while the eheim is 251gph... but the eheim mentions filter circulation at 172 while the other ones don't even state this. and i would think this is very important. but the eheim is only 30 dollars more... thanks.

oh as for siphon? yes these are aquatic turtles. I have them in the 70 gallon with water more than half filled.

I have used the Hagen Fluval filter for around 7 years on my one tank and have never had a problem with it.

With your tank only half filled you may want to look for an internal underwater filter like biggun110 suggested.

Hi,

I don't think the outside canisters will be able to siphon in a half filled tank. If you want a good mechanical filter to just pull dirt out of the water try Fluval. If you want a good biological, water quality filter try Eheim. Eheim is considered the better quality product by many hobbyists. I think you need to go with an internal power filter with turtles. I'd check some reptile sites and forums and get suggestions as the terrarium hobby has exploded in recent years and might have some neat stuff.

I have. and i don't find many sites too knowledgeable or organized on this. I think you are right though the undergravel might be the way. I did see the penn-plax in action and it comes with a sprayer you mount on the top or just free flow. And i bet i could get a longer hose to make sure it fits into the middle of the tank. I would rather spend the money to get it right. Eheim was a bit more expensive. I found a reptile store not to far from me. Next county over, i am going to have pay them a visit. thanks for all the help.

no no no!!
not "undergravel"!
biggun said "internal underwater canister filters Eheim makes"
huge, major difference!

underGRAVEL filters are major nightmares, they sit completely under the gravel, along the entire bottom of the tank, and are amazingly dirty,
they are by far the worst type of filter to get, they result in filthy tank conditions, because you cant clean the gunk that collects under the filter plate..im amazed they are still even sold:

what everyone is saying you need is a cannister filter.
they sit completely underwater, not on the tank edge, and you can easily lift them out of the tank to clean the filter media..
very efficient, clean, and easy maintance filters..
thats what you want!

here are a few photos of cannister filters:

thats the kind you need..

Power filter:
http://www.aquaworld.ca/usrimage/cascade%20power%20filter.jpg
sits on the edge of the tank..good filters, but in your case, with only 50% of the tank filled, the big intake pipe wont reach that far.

Cannister filter:

the kind you want in this case.
sits completely underwater, not on the tank edge.
these are considered the most "serious" filters..the big-time salt-water people always use these..
again, excellent filters. The "eheim" brand is often considered the cadillac of filters, but there are plenty otghers that are just as good, and not as expensive..

undergravel filter.

pure evil, stay away at all costs.
If I ruled the world, any aquarium under 5 gallons, and undergravel filters, would be illegal..
