Yes, we do need to look down sometimes.  But I don't know about that "when ingested, the patients breaks into hysterical laughter" thing for the Flammulina velutipes.  That's an Enoki - see http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/march97.html - and plenty of those are eaten without hysterical laughter.  But the photo you linked might not be showing the same mushroom as the one I linked.  This is why mushrooming can be such a perilous thing.  People don't die because of a misidentified CP.

Yes, there are several species.
In the UK the commonest is the Honey Fungus Armillaria mellea, however the luminous part of the fungus is the rhizomorph and not the fruiting body. It lives in decaying wood, and the phenomenon is well-known enough for it to have a folk-name: 'foxfire'.
Curiously, another species (Panellus stypticus) is luminescent in it's North American forms, but not in it's European ones.

Just remember, when you go out and pick and eat mushrooms, the kind folks querying as to the cause of your death ask that you please leave a sample behind so they can know.

lol! Funny enough, it's actually true.

On a more relevent note, thanks for the links, this could develop in to a very interesting and informative topic!
