Dell and Unbuntu

I don't know anything about linux but I have come to despise Microsoft. Why does all the good software have to be only for windows.

I've been wanting to partition off a section of my drive to see how Linux is. The best thing about Linux is that it's pretty much free. :D

Why don't you just use windows virtual machine it wotk for me.

I'm not a huge linus fan, simply because I have grown up on windows and know how to use it, but linux does run very smoothly. It manages to not freeze up on me as much as Macs OS and windows. I'm just not used to it!

I use vitrual machine on windows 98 to run programs that may contain viruses,I also grew up with windows from the time I was 10 :)

Whatever you might think of Vista, it ain't half as ugly as Unbuntu.

Feels like Windows 98.

I personally think Ubuntu, after some customization, is one of the best look operating systems available. After using it for around 6 months I can't see myself going back to windows. I had used windows since windows 3.1 but always got frustrated with the operating system for some reason...

p.s. I think Dell shipping linux loaded systems is a big step forward to the linux community :)

I've noticed that it seems the Windows people stick to Windows while the Mac people and Linux people tend to stay with one of the two. The thing with that is that Microsoft has a BAD tendency to copy the other two. It's not hard to copy Linux as it is often a free OS. Where else do you think the start menu came from?

What version of Ubuntu are you using? It sure as heck ain't the most recent.

They've done that before. They've shipped Red Hat with some of their servers. I don't know if they still do that though.

The nice thing that I've noticed with Mac and Linux is that hardware is MUCH easier to access. With windows you have to into the hard drive or device manager or Control panel. With Linux (fedora, ubuntu, etc) you have a drop down menu. With Mac you open up the hard drive and it gives you a list. Short of delving into a complex world, I have difficulty finding hardware all in one place on a Windows machine.

Maybe it's all cause I have security issues with Microsoft. Good gosh, you need to look at the list of Viruses, Spam, and Spyware that Symantec has listed. IT"S INCREDIBLE how susceptible Windows is.

I have to admit, Windows has one thing up on everyone, the Blue Screen of Death is a nice color of blue.:jester:

It's very easy to keep your Windows computer safe from viruses and such if you have the correct software and the knowledge to back it up..

One INSANELY useful tool I use is McAfee SiteAdvisor. It rates sites as Green or Red, green being good and red being bad (obviously) just don't go to.. or show major caution in the red sites.

Also.. even though most people deny this because they don't want others to know that they look at porn.. like 95% of the viruses people get on their computers are from looking at PORN. Don't deny it cuz you know it's true. :p

Some tips..

Get SiteAdvisor and USE IT
Don't open weird emails or their attachments..
If you suspect a file has something malicious in it.. don't open it.. scan it with a virus scanner and there's plenty of great free ones out there to use so there's no excuse for not having one..

I've managed to keep my new computer virus free since I got it back in.. October or November.

Windows needs similar measures to keep it "stable" as well. You really just have to know how the system works in order to keep it going. Windows is not very user friendly... but really no computer or OS is simple enough to be user friendly. You have to know what you're doing. Whatever method you use to learn it is up to you. (I learned through experience. :p)
