Baby With 2 Faces Born in North India

2008-04-08 10:11:44
By GURINDER OSAN Associated Press Writer

<!--startclickprintinclude-->SAINI SUNPURA, India (AP) — A baby with two faces was born in a northern Indian village, where she is doing well and is being worshipped as the reincarnation of a Hindu goddess, her father said Tuesday.
The baby, Lali, apparently has an extremely rare condition known as craniofacial duplication, where a single head has two faces. Except for her ears, all of Lali's facial features are duplicated — she has two noses, two pairs of lips and two pairs of eyes.
"My daughter is fine — like any other child," said Vinod Singh, 23, a poor farm worker.
Lali has caused a sensation in the dusty village of Saini Sunpura, 25 miles east of New Delhi. When she left the hospital, eight hours after a normal delivery on March 11, she was swarmed by villagers, said Sabir Ali, the director of Saifi Hospital.
"She drinks milk from her two mouths and opens and shuts all the four eyes at one time," Ali said.
Rural India is deeply superstitious and the little girl is being hailed as a return of the Hindu goddess of valor, Durga, a fiery deity traditionally depicted with three eyes and many arms.
Up to 100 people have been visiting Lali at her home every day to touch her feet out of respect, offer money and receive blessings, Singh told The Associated Press.
"Lali is God's gift to us," said Jaipal Singh, a member of the local village council. "She has brought fame to our village."
Village chief Daulat Ram said he planned to build a temple to Durga in the village.
"I am writing to the state government to provide money to build the temple and help the parents look after their daughter," Ram said.
Lali's condition is often linked to serious health complications, but the doctor said she was doing well.
"She is leading a normal life with no breathing difficulties," said Ali, adding that he saw no need for surgery.
Lali's parents were married in February 2007. Lali is their first child.
Singh said he took his daughter to a hospital in New Delhi where doctors suggested a CT scan to determine whether her internal organs were normal, but Singh said he felt it was unnecessary.
"I don't feel the need of that at this stage as my daughter is behaving like a normal child, posing no problems," he said.

Neat! That's crazy that she blinks all four eyes at once. I hope the dad made the right decision not getting a precautionary CT - complications associated with birth defects are no laughing matter. It would be awesome if she grew up to lead a successful life with this...
"Worshipped as the reincarnation of a diety, ages 0-13" - what a line for the resumé!

There are so many atrocious birth defects that seem to pop up nonstop in India. I always wonder if its because their living conditions are absolutely heinous, of if they as a people got dealt a horrible hand in the genetic lottery, or if their population growth rate is just so ridiculously large, that we see stuff like that there even though it could potentially happen in 1 in 10000000 births anywhere. I think since China has some pretty atrocious conditions, and a roughly equal growth rate, but we don't see birth defects that make kids that look like they belong in sci-fi movies (and with such frequency), we can successfully weed out #1 and 3.

:hail:

I think that the reason we don't see much of that in the US and other developed countries is because of prenatal care. These conditions are discovered early and the pregnancy is terminated.

Hadn't thought of that one. But lots of China has no prenatal care as well, and we don't see as much of this, or so frequently so.....extreme.....in China.

The dad looks like he has absolutely no clue what's going on lol.

Or maybe China just has so much control over the media outlets that when it does happen we do not hear of it.

I think most dads look that way, lol.

xvart.

Thats some crazy stuff. Me and my friends were talking about this in school today after the teacher brought it up.

There's a girl who lives in New Germany MN who has two whole heads, she was supposed to be a twin but only the head, neck and spinal column split (partially). She was on oprah some years back talking about what it was like living that way and the local news said recently she was eleigble for taking driving lessons.

I think the reason we see cases like this coming out of India is because like Ozzy said they dont generally do ultrasounds or any other prenatal care that would detect this early. Also the birthrate in India is still extermely high which is the reason you see so many of these cases in India. China doesnt produce as many for two reasons first their birth rate is much lower, secondly when you are only allowed one child and you have a child with a condition such as this I imagine it is always "still born" or "dies" shortly after birth, if you understand what I am saying.

there was a two faced pig that died of complications, it would eat with one mouth and breath with the other at the same time idk what happened but maybe it got little bits of food in it's lungs.

I just looked it up. India's birthrate is higher (~22 vs. ~13), but India has 1.1 billion, while China has 1.3.

They made a whole tv documentary on her that I saw a while back. She (or...they?) went to school like a normal girl. I'm pretty sure they were two different girls with one body.

They did get their license by the way. One of the girls has control of the wheel and the other has control of the pedals. Amazing stuff.

Can they both talk?

I think it would be COOL to be able to have two main vocal chords! I could harmonize with my self!

Yea, they can both talk. They're basically like two different people who share one body.
