Bug Catching

I thought it would be cool to make a list of bugs and where and how to catch them. So here's what I know about where bugs are and how to catch them so far:

Fly: Where- They live outside but can get inside and like dog leavings and garbage.
How to get- A net, jar, or even a plastic bag on the end of a stick (like a net).

Spider: Where- They live in garbage cans, garages, houses, and in the woods. You can find where some would be by finding a web.
How to get- Jar, plastic bag, tweezers.

Ant: Where- They make nests in cracks in concrete, the woods, and they can be found on fruit laying on the ground.
How- Tweezers, jar, plastic bag, or fingers (for the non bitey ones)

Pill Bug: Where- Lift up a large object that is sitting on the grass/dirt and they will run around.
How- Tweezers, fingers, jar, plastic bag.

Fruit fly: Where- Rotting fruits or vegetables.
How- Net, plastic bag.

Bee: Where- Nests can be found hanging from the underside of roofs. Bees can be found near/on flowers in the daytime.
How- (handle with caution) Net, jar, plastic bag.

Cranefly: Where- Can be found flying around lawns in the afternoon.
How- Net, jar, plastic bag, hands.

Various small flying insects: Where- Almost anywhere outside if you look carefully. Most are gray, white, or green, making them easy to spot.
How:Net, plastic bag, hands. (most of these flies are slow so they can easily be caught with one hand)

Mosquito: Where- Mosquitos like the shade. If you can't find any, go into the woods and they will find you.
How- Net, plastic bag, hands.

Grasshopper/cricket: Where- Tall grass, fields.
How- Net, hands.

Slugs: Where- Usually found in gardens, rotting food, and in the dark, waiting for you to slip on them. Slugs can climb up smooth surfaces. They leave a shiny trail of slime behind them.
How- Plastic bag, gloves, or a sharp object . Slugs like dog/cat food. This can be used as bait. They also love beer, and will drink alot of it, get drunk, then drown. Beer can also be used as a bait, as long as you make sure no slugs drown as this may cause death to the slug.

To make a slug/crawling bug trap, get a plastic water bottle. Now take the bottle and cut off the end that you drink from so you have a funnel. Now get some tape/glue. Take the funnel shape and put it back on the bottle, but instead of the drinking end of the funnel facing outward, have that end inside the bottle. Then glue/tape it like that. Now drop your bait in the bottle and lay it outside on its side overnight. The way it works is that when the slug/crawling bug goes into the funnel to get the bait, it falls in and can't get back out.

Bugs that are not ok would be anything that can chew their way out of the plant. Also, for VFTs, nothing too big to fit in the trap, nothing with a hard exoskeleton (beetles, pill bugs, etc.), and nothing with long legs that will stick out of the trap. This may cause bacterial infection in the trap.

I can't really think of any others, but if you know of more, then make a list like this and post it

Fly: Big jar propped upside down over dog poop. The flies will usually fly up when they see you and get caught in the jar, pick it up, cap it and you're done. Plus the dog feels like he's helping.

heh,

Why my vft's catch daddy long legs all the time and do just fine.

Well some people say that things sticking out will cause bacterial infection to the trap.

YOU FORGOT WASPS

yeah those soda pop things work great might I suggest upgrading to a 2 or 3 liter bottle.
Also you could put some yellow jacket attractant they have replacement packets for this product
Accessories_Yellow_Jacket_Trap.jpg
and like 2 or 3 packets of the attracant is like 2-3 dollars.
but if there was liquid inside the bottle the wasps might drown in it so maybe put a stick in there or something for them to land on. Also don't set it in the sun where it could overheat.
Venus flytraps need live prey that will squirm around in the pitchers and further stimulate the digestive proccess so don't kill the wasps and good luck finding a way to release them ffrom the bottle.
Maybe stick the bottle in the freezer for 5 minutes and see if it makes the wasps slow or drowsy and then as fast as you can cut the bottle open and go set it next to your plants.

you don't need to feed them routinely, they will attract insects on their own.

put the bottle in the fridge for 10-15 mins wasp will be dead, you better act quick though, their metabolism acts FAST!

Dude one year all the bees or wasps just swarmed my ventrata outside. If your vft's are outside why not just let them catch what they catch?
