New Arrivals and an Unexpected Find

I was excited to receive two Nepenthes in the mail today. They are quite petite, but I still love them.

N. tentaculata and N. glabrata, respectively:

I was plenty satisfied already, but I had planned to visit a local nursery in search of a pure source of perlite and peat moss. While I was there I took a look around and was surprised to find some nice little pots of cape sundews for only $7. I counted up the plants and there seem to be at least 9 separate growth points in mine. It's practically overflowing the pot! An awesome find, and it feels so good not to have to pay shipping for once. I even managed to get it home with the dew intact :)

Truly, it's been a great day for plants.

If you want lots of capensis...I used to have around 50 of them!

and they were mature.

For some reason, I don't think that's a glabrata by the leaf shape, but I guess we'll have to find out when it pitchers.

yeah my glabrata has always had very narrow leaves and the leaf attachment is quite different, ill grab you photos of mine in a bit

Hmm...The leaves look right to me--long and slender, just like others I've seen. It is a VERY small plant at this point (that's a 3 inch pot), and the picture doesn't really do it justice. However, I bought it from a professional online seller whom I trust, and I find it hard to believe that it's anything different than what it was marked as.

That said, I suppose a mix up could have been possible.

Perhaps some better pictures would help...

Based on these, does it definitely not look like glabrata?

It's hard to tell till you grow it out some.
very small glabrata seedlings

i can tell the difference already with those seedlings zero, already showing the perfect straight narrow leaves, the blade of the leaf also extends down a little ways on the tendril, your leaves in my opinion remind me much more strongly of talangensis but its possible that its just a glabrata that wasnt too happy with its conditions.....
Here is what my plant looked when it was younger (in a 3 1/2" pot, same pot it is still in)

I'm sorry, but I just don't see any difference. I've looked at several different pictures of specimens online, and to me, this looks like N. glabrata. At the very least, I see no reason to question its identity at this early stage in its development. It could be that it looks different to you, because the nursery I ordered from acclimates their plants to household-like conditions and provides mainly natural sunlight. Shorter days with less sun can cause the shortening of new leaves during the winter months.

Honestly, I didn't post this so I could have a debate as to whether my plants are the species I know them to be. I mean, it's not like I picked this plant up from a disreputable seller or even a fellow amateur. I got it from a widely known online nursery, and I trust the site I bought it from, as do innumerable other growers.

im not trying to fight with you so calm down, im just stating that it doesnt look like a glabrata in my eyes, if it is then it is. i was posting for comparisons sake, relax.

notice that bottle neck like shape at the leaf attachment where the leaf has emerged from the previous one? thats not a trait of glabrata, atleast not in any of the ones ive seen, the blades always fold out competely and dont retain any sort of tubular shape at the attachment, so if it is a glabrata, its a bit roughed up but should recover in no time, enjoy your plants

A nice group, nonetheless!

I wasn't saying that it's not glabrata, I just posted the best comparison pic I could find for you.
Please keep us updated when it grows out some.

Peace,
Zero

I know you're all just trying to be helpful and I do appreciate that. I liked looking at all the glabratas from the wee seedlings to the larger ones.

I see what you're saying about the leaf attachments SirKristoff. I took a close look them on my own plant and noticed that only the oldest leaf was not bottle necked. I guess I'll just have to do my best to nurture it back to normal health, and I thank you for your help.

Sure thing, Zero. You're seedlings look wonderful, by the way!
