ive read a few ideas here on the process, i still have one more question, if I'm just using a reg digital camera, how do i get the same focal distance each time , the lens moves via a button, is it possible to get it to the same setting every time?
I'm wanting to do macro shots.

You could make a fixture that holds the camera a specific distance from the plant. Ensuring each photo is the same distance and same angle (assuming you don't move the plant). You can buy ones pre-made that kinda look like snakes that will lock into all kinds of positions.
