Think these pots will work?

So I saw these pots the other day at the local nursery (the one I work next door to, actually :-D ) and thought they might be good for someone (like ME!) who can't remember to water their plants in a timely manner. I was thinking they'd work for VFT's or ceph's that don't necessarily work well in the tray method.

They're labeled self watering pots. They are ceramic but unglazed in the right places to allow water to seep in. Since I'm doomed to never remember to water my plants at the right time (how my first VFT died :-( ), I thought these might work! ???

Waddaya all think?

I don't see why not.. But I don't know anything about how they work.

Do you fill up the whole bottom part with water? It looks like it works sort of like the tray method, but the bottom part is completely enclosed, which would help prevent evaporation? Might be interesting to try out.

Since is like small grains of sand being put together, perhaps it will evaporate or transport the water trought the small microscopic holes that you can't see with the eye. It makes sense? I'm just making a guess since you said is unglazed.

Good luck!

From what I've observed they might not supply enough water. Wicks will allow more water to be transported quickly.

although these will not transport as much water as a wick, I can see them being a more expensive version of a pot within a pot for keeping roots cool. I usually put the plant in an unglazed pot and put that pot within a glazed or plastic pot that is bigger and fill the space between with lfs and keep it wet at all times..this helps keep the media cool.

yup, water is placed in the outer pot and the bigger pot set even has a fill hole...

exactly! The water seeps through the ceramic to the inner pot slowly and supposedly as needed for "normal" plants... I figured since cephs and vft's like less water the lower infiltration rate of the water into the inner pot might be just the right amount for these plants...

:crap: Wire Man any details on your observations? I like the wick idea, tho... hmmm

They are primarily for african violets. I use them them with good results with my mexican pings. I think it would be too dry for most other cp's. Possibly cephs would do ok, but it might not have the best airflow for their roots, that you would get from overhead watering them.

They wont keep the soil wet enough unfortunately unless theres a hole in the bottom of the pot which I am assuming theres not. It wouldnt be that difficult to drill one though if you have your heart set on that specific pot just dont press down too hard as ya drill ;-)

nono, not committed to these pots, just thought they might do well... guess not, unless I grow pings! Thank you all!
