Plants are looking great, Johnny. After seeing your veitchii pink, I'm sort of wishing I hadn't traded away mine.

veitchii 'Pink' gets better and better looking the bigger it gets. I wasn't wild about it's juvenile pitchers and toyed with trading it off as well but, I'm sure glad I held onto it.

Awww my little bey-bey... It does indeed look much better... Now for it to pitcher! Good job yo.

Love the Gothica.

Your P. gigantea looks mislabeled though Im afraid.

Nice veitchii "Pink". I like that clone more than "K" or some reason. The robcantleyi is insanely dark! It looks like a ramispina on steroids!

The robcantleyi is changing color like crazy.

Here it is when it first opened.
<a href="http://s1109.photobucket.com/albums/h434/Nepenthes138/Nepenthes%20-%20Highland/?action=view&current=058.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h434/Nepenthes138/Nepenthes%20-%20Highland/058.jpg" border="0" alt="Nepenthes robcantleyi"></a>

Then it shifted to this.
<a href="http://s1109.photobucket.com/albums/h434/Nepenthes138/Nepenthes%20-%20Highland/?action=view&current=070.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h434/Nepenthes138/Nepenthes%20-%20Highland/070.jpg" border="0" alt="Nepenthes robcantleyi"></a>

And now this.
<a href="http://s1109.photobucket.com/albums/h434/Nepenthes138/Nepenthes%20-%20Highland/?action=view&current=004-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h434/Nepenthes138/Nepenthes%20-%20Highland/004-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Nepenthes rocantleyi"></a>

'Gothica' was the first hybrid I actually liked and remains to be one of my favorites. Especially after the peristome blackens up.

As far as the P.gigantea is concerned, I'd have to agree with you. I got in a trade from another member on here. They don't normally get that red, do they ?

Yes, the pitchers all seem to go through drastic color changes as they mature. The 2nd, smaller one should be putting out a pitcher soon. I'm very curious to see what that one does color wise. I'm hoping that it settles more in the red spectrum like mom.

The red is what I noticed first, but also the leaf shape is off, and gigantea doesnt get as pronounced "drool edges" as seen on your plant.

This is a photo I took about a week ago for a giveaway on the Canadian forum. All plants are grown beside each other, about 10" away from a 6 bulb HOT5 fixture. P. gigantea is seen in the bottom left, and as you can see are pure green. My main plant is the exact same color and is actually in stronger light than these small plants.

(using a link as not to confuse with your photos)

I'll just hold onto it until it puts on some more size. Hopefully, I can get a flower out of it this year. Maybe get a positive ID on it then.

  • #212
I'm only somewhat following the ping conversation, but if it's a gigantea ID that's in doubt, check the undersides of the leaves for dew. P. gigantea is (to my knowledge) the only ping that has dew on BOTH sides of the leaves. If yours isn't gooey on the undersides, then it's not gigantea.

I'd need a microscope. That thing is the size of a dime.

haha anytime! I knew there was another species or two with the trait but had to look it up myself.

I hate having unknown plants. Especially obvious mystery hybrids. Totally goes against my botanical O.C.D.
