From what i gather it is actually a good time to ship temperate plants since they are dormant/going dormant correct? what about tropicals and sub tropicals.....can they survive 3-5 days in a somewhat insulated cardboard box alright? I imagine so for now but what about January?

Right now they should still be fine, as until they're actualy delivered they're kept (as long as you denote the fact that they're perishable) in a temperature controled room at the postal facility, it's just the worry that someone won't be there to receive the plants, and they may freeze waiting on the doorstep or in the mailbox.
