Nursery Pots: What Do You Use?

CorneliusSchrute

A leuco by any other name would still be as glutto
I have decided I want to uniformly organize my Sarracenia collection since it is getting quite large and unruly in regards to pot uniformity. I feel like the growing process would be easier with either four-inch or five-inch square pots in large community trays; right now my plants are in variously sized and shaped pots in what ever kind of tray I can find. I have two questions before I buy materials, though.

1) What size would you recommend? My pots now are relatively large for the more mature plants (I have various hybrids and few representatives of every species), varying between six and nine inches deep and across. I was thinking of down sizing for the new, square nursery pots: say four of five inches square and high. I figure the four would be good for most smaller plants, and the five could accommodate everything but the biggest rhizomes.

2) What brand do you recommend? I have used the Kord in the past. They are seemingly the same ones that death cube plants come planted in. They are high quality and durable for several years in my experience. I am also thinking about using the Coex planters. I have bought regular garden plants from Lowes, WalMart, etc. planted in these. They are quite a bit thinner, but come in nearly the same dimensions for a reduced price.

Hello corey

I only use kord square and round pots for all my plants :)
I wash and use the same 30-40 pots since years

Good to hear others have similar mileage, Francois! The Kord really do seem superior.

I guess my second question could be rephrased as, "How cheap am I?" I save about 30% in cost if I buy to Coex, which for my quantity is only about $8. ???

I saw Home Depot sold nursery pots. Do they have square one? I also wonder about Lowe's....

I use many different style pots depending on size and species.

For standard rosetted Drosera and smaller Cephalotus, Pinguicula and Sarracenia seedlings :

For larger Pinguicula, terrestrial Utricularia, small groups of rosetted Drosera and pygmy Drosera :

For small Heliamphora, Nepenthes seedlings, single South American Drosera, single tuberous Drosera :

For medium to large Nepenthes, larger Cephalotus, large Heliamphora, Brocchinia, larger colonies of tuberous, binata complex, South American and South African Drosera :

For epiphytic Utricularia, I prefer to use net pots or to make my own by melting holes in quart take out containers.
