Just amazing! The last site looks like something I saw on a cover of CPN a while back. I've only seen them in Butterfly Valley before. It looks like the Darlingtonia are falling off the slope in one of the pictures.
How can you be sure you are anywhere? "No matter where you go, there you are."
Ok, since Zu has since posted a few picks here is the itinerary:
May 25
Portland, OR - rented a Ford Focus, quick lunch and picked up snacks for the road and headed south to Eight Dollar Mountain Botanical area south of Selma, OR. Site has an extensive Darlingtonia fen. Road in was covered with heavy patches of snow. Lacking 4wd and appropriated footgear we did not proceed. Overnight stay in Medford, OR.
May 26
South towards Klamath Falls, CA to Fourmile Lake in the Fourmile Campground area. Bull Swamp site should have Drosera anglica, D. intermedia and Utricularia macrorhiza. Again heavy patches of snow on the roads.
Loop around to Highway 199 we then headed to the "Darlingtonia Trail" between the Panther Flat and Grassy Flat campgrounds.
North Fork Rd (near Madame Gasquet Lane), Gasquet, CA. Darlingtonia, Drosera rotundifolia and Pinguicula macroceras ssp nortensis
Stony Creek trail near the Smith River
L.E Horton RNA - steep unpaved road, turned back 3/4 of the way due to lateness of day and lack of 4wd vehicle.
Overnight in Crescent City
May 27
South to Big Lagoon Beach north of Eureka. Sphagnum bog with Drosera rotundifolia. Recommend footwear for ankle/mid-calf deep water if you want to explore the upper bogs.
Drove through redwood forest
Covered bridge on Douglas Park Road near Hiouchi , CA - Darlingtonia and P. macroceras
Road cut on South Fork Rd - extensive P. macroceras and Darlingtonia growing on cut wall
Attempted to find Myrtle Creek Trail but ended up (close by) at Myrtle Beach. No CPs found at Beach.
Overnight again in Crescent City
May 28
After a bit of research back to the Myrtle Creek Trail (look for Call Box 199-071)
Return to covered bridge site
drove through Redwood forest going other way
Return to Portland for overnight stay
May 29
Return to California
Recommend having some of Mo's Clam Chowder at the airport
