It can take up to a couple of months to reach the size that most people desire ( IMO ).
I say 6-8 weeks
You have to be careful NOT to plant the rhizome too far into the soil. Plant it right at the point where you see the white part. That should be at the soil level.
Too far down and you will kill the plant.
The only other things you can do is give it the best conditions ( sun, water, temperatures ).
