Dormancy, hibernation, sleeping etc...

If you could manage to keep temps above freezing, it should be OK. What are the temps in the shed?

I would recommend doing dormancy yearly but the choice is yours. And sometimes experimentation is a good thing.

If your plants are growing outside and going dormant now then you can probably just leave them outside for the winter if you feel like and they will break dormancy on their own in spring. As for maximum dormancy time, it all depends on the plant but 4, 5, and even 6 months are doable if necessary.

Sarrs can take temps down to 20 and sometimes even lower. Your milkshed sounds like a good place so long as there is enough light. Last year I used a patio closet on the really cold nights and it worked really well. The plants do not have to be kept above freezing necessaraly they just should not remain frozen for prolonged periods.

I'm most interested in the "LA temp" thing, I live in southern california, its pretty hot here in the winter, about 45-60 something degrees. I think I'll try one outside, but I don't know for sure if it will work.

What plants are you growing? VFTs have been "naturalized" to southern FL as have a fair number of Sarr species. You will probably be okay.
