Abreviation for the sake of convinience. 'S.' stands for Sarracenia, 'P.' for Pinguicula, 'U.' for Utricularia and so on.
The 'x' means crossed with or hybrid.
So all together you get something like this: S. x. excellens so what you have is a hybrid plant called excellens. If you asked some one the parents they would tell you S. leucophylla x S. minor which means that you crossed leuco with minor to get the plant.
