It is silica to my understanding. I think pool filter sand is silica, and is very usable in my understanding. I have some pool filter sand I'm using right now and it works wonder.
The only grade I have found in pool filter sand has been coarse, and very good for all sorts of CP uses. Finer grit (about like table salt) can be had from construction supply co.'s that use it for sandblasting. In all cases, silica sand is white. The whiter the better if it is silica: greyish appearing sand likely has much mineral contamination, even if it is silica.
Pool filter sand has always been the cleanest I can find. Clean is good!
