Jimscott, thats the thing, I DONT HAVE A CHOICE. Our school district is pathetic, if your last name doesn't click, you're "just another". But thats, irrelevant....back on the topic of my school and French. The reason we're taught French is infact as you stated because we are so close to Canada were French is spoken, but instead of giving us some real languages to learn, like German or Spanish (practical ones since I've met waaay more German and Spanish people up here) they teach us French without any other options....well I shouldn't say that. Spanish is offered in the Senior year, which I plan on taking. But just for your information, I didn't choose French, the facist school district did. EDIT: and referring to your quote jimscott, our French teacher is drilling all the ENGLISH stuff into our heads, not the French language.

I have traveled the world but never to Canada. I was under the impression that English is the dominant language there, except for the area in and around Quebec. Am I wrong?

Officially, the province of Quebec is French speaking and New Brunswick is bilingual. I think Quebec (the city) has always been dominantly French since the time of its settlement. Montreal used to have a much stronger English presence and still has its enclaves of English (not just for anglaphone tourists, I mean). If there aren't too many firearms or other weapons handy, having two languages come together makes for a dynamic place.

I think chinese would be the most practical since you know half the world's population speaks it. Unless you want to go area wise which would mean russian should be our top forced language. Not spanish. I have been to mexico and several of my close family members have gone to spain and other spanish "area" (former territories) and most people can speak English. I have conversed with Spanish speaking people in French and family members conversed in Italian. Even though countless people speak spanish most seem to know someother language that is more commonly used. Well my family members used only Italian to go around Europe just to see what would happen so I have to say it is commonly used.

You're probably 100% right. I'm sure there are countries that are unfriendly to English only speaking visitors. I was just commenting on my experiences. I didn't mean for it to sound like I was discounting what you were saying.

Maybe you should learn proper English first.
