What are your views on....

All around the country are schools called Cyber Charter Schools. I am currently enrolled in the Pennsylvania one called Pennsylvania Learners Online (PALO) and it's really cool. I've been in the school for 2 years and I plan on returning next year. All the work is done through a school system known as Blackboard where teachers post work and links to online textbooks to use. Work is set up as a weekly thing. Every Monday work is posted, it is the students' job to complete that work before the following Monday unless otherwise noted by a teacher. I, for one, LOVE this system. I can do all of my work on Monday and be done for the rest of the week. But what I do is do a subject a day which only takes 1-2 hours versus the SEVEN HOUR SCHOOL DAY of public schools. Some people don't agree with these systems and are set on getting rid of these schools. Since that will most likely never happen I don't really care but they don't understand that for some kids, public school is pure burning HELL. Most of you know what I'm talking about and hear about school shootings and kids bringing guns to school and things like that. These schools help prevent it, they do nothing but good for the kids that hate Public School. It's also good for the kids that get expelled from public schools and have nowhere else to go. That way, they aren't causing trouble in a different school every year. So what are all of your thoughts on it?

Ayo Hellz here,
i think its kinda cheap, no offense,
the Homework would be kinda e z, namean? (hint: cut and Paste)
the test, you can cheat SOOOO EZ
and the whole "school experience is pretty much abolished
and things like Phys. ed and those classes where you get physical are pretty much abolished,
and anyways, nomatter if you are enrolled in school or not, your parents pay the same taxes (and if im not mistaken, the more kids you have in school, the less a tax you pay, i think)
anyway, normal schooling (public school that you actually go to to learn) arent that bad, and the programs they provide (like clubs and sports and stuff) are really good, and should be taken advantage of (I love golf club, free driving range days, and free rounds of golf are awsome ^^)
just my thoughts,
Hellz

Public school is pure burning hell... but I'm not sure if escaping the experience is a good thing or not. What comes after school can often be much worse, and I wonder if being even less prepared for that is in a student's best interest in the long run. You could consider it Harsh Reality 101.

Though at the same time, I probably would have gotten much better grades and cared much more about what I was learning if I'd done it your way.

public schools teach social skills, so you need them. same thing goes for private schools of course. sitting on your but at home at "school" playing a computer doesn't

Cyberschools are great for self-starters -- those who have the motivation to do the required work, and to even go beyond what is required.  However, the cyberschool work must be supplemented with activities that allow the student to socialize with others who are around the same age because it makes for a more well-rounded person.  The home school movement has realized that, so many home schooling parents have arranged for their children to have regular activities with other home schoolers.  Some cyberschools have their students meet once a week or so.  Socialization can also happen through organized sports, such as soccer.

I believe that devoting a couple of hours a day to cyberschool work is equivalent to an entire day at a traditional school.  Most of the day at a traditional school is taken up by non-learning activities, such as lunch, recess, changing classes, teachers having to calm students down after they change classes, and disciplining students.  One study showed that teachers in one particular school district spend more than half of class time disciplining their students!  So when it comes down to it, students at a traditional school might have only a couple of hours of actual instruction anyway.

ChronoKiento, it seems like you are making good use of cyberschool.  You are saving a lot of time by not attending a traditional school.  I hope you are mature enough to make good use of this invaluable resource.

I knew I shouldn't have posted this thread because none of you understand except for endparenthesis and Tropics. If you are caught "copy pasting" then you are expelled no ifs ands or buts you're out. With Phys Ed. you have to have a log of physical activity every week with so many hours of physical activity on it. If you cheat on that then it's your own darn fault if you get overweight. It is NOT that easy to cheat on tests either plus, the teachers will know if you're doing horribly on one thing and doing 100% on another. There are certain signs that tell you. And about the social skills thing, I'm online all the time TALKING and either way I'd rather skip out on a few social skills that i won't learn because my school district is full of total A-HOLES that would rather talk to walls than to me, rather than commiting SUICIDE or shooting the crap out of my school which is some alternatives that people feel they are FORCED to make! In my eyes, the whole "school experience" royally sucks anyway. They always say, highschool is only for SOME people and Cyber school is only for SOME people other people will like things that others don't, that's life. But it's nice to actually escape from HELL and feel some nice cool wind for once don't you think?!

Also, I AM mature enough to take on the responsibilities of the school even though sometimes I don't act it, but I am, if you don't believe me then I can show you my report card. As for social activities as of now I'd rather stay away from people in real life because I can't handle it. I know almost nothing but bad things from people my age. Sorry for getting angry but this kind of thing really ticks me off I didn't think I'd get this sort of response.

Ayo, Hellz here
Whoa buddy, calm down man...

GUNS AT PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THE U.S.A?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!

OMG that never happens here!!!

Well I agree that some public schools are hell........not the learning, the bullying and teasing.
But I can never learn anything sat at a computer or learning from textbooks or worksheets at home, I tried it for 2 months and it was.......boring as hell, and I learned very little. I need someone to explain it to me in words first.
Also I agree with JustlikeAPill. You may get curriculum at home, but you get no socialising with other kids(except for via messenger) but no face to face conversations, and in teenage years, socialising is very important, esspecially with the opposite gender. You dont get social skills either, schools teach this.
Sitting at home doesnt teach you any social skills.

What would be a much better option is if you move to a much smaller, private school, where the kids are pleasant, a-holes dont get into private schools because private schools only choose students who are nice and willing to learn. It certanly worked for me.

Online talking doesnt help, Im afraid.
You need to learn body language and how to make proper friends in real life. Computers dont teach you body language or social skills.

Firstly, I am all for schools that are trying different methods for teaching different kinds of kids.

Kids need to be in school. Statistics aside just look at the general populace of children and young adults. They spend the majority of their time outside of school sitting in front of some screen or another already. Even if teachers spend a large amount of time disciplining children.............Ummm........children need disciplin. What happens in the real world when a supervisor "disciplines" them? Are they gonna cry, break down, go postal, quit? Public schools prepare you for public life because most of us will spend our lives out in the public. Socializing, judging, working, eating, relaxing, having fun, etc....... these are things that are part of life. I really think social structure is needed for real life. As for bullying, I am sorry but this is also part of life. You can't go around hiding from every person out there that'll bother you or bully you for their own amusement. Life is full of 'em, thats the way it is. I think this sends a message of hiding from the negative aspects of REAL LIFE. Life is not fair, never was, never will be...........thats life.

I think online courses are great but thats after you've already learned the basics of life.

I HATE calling it bullying because that's not what it (always) is I would never give someone my lunch money or something stupid just because they say they're gonna beat me up. I'd just fight back and if I lose then whoopdie doo I got a black eye and claim self defense and they are in juvenile hall bawling their eyes out so I win. Also, I am 15 years old and I was 13 when I left public school, I'm pretty sure I've got all the social skills I need, I'm not talking about cyber school from K-12 I'm talking about in middle and highschool because those are the worst years for some kids. As for learning social skills, it's nearly impossible if the people won't talk to you and when they do, nothing comes out of their mouthes but hurtful comments which makes them not one ANY social contact. I'd rather not put up with that for any longer. When kids are treated like that for so long they start to crack and go psychotic and suicidal maybe even homicidal. Trust me, I've almost been there it's not pretty. It's the opposite of pretty it truly is hell. As for sitting through it to gain immunities from it, it doesn't always work that way, sometimes it goes the opposite way and the kid will develop insecurities and other things that are not normal social behavior. Like I said before, for some people, middle and high school is hell, and for others it's great. It's total opposites it's REALLY important that you guys understand that.

And yes Dino, there have been a lot of people to bring guns and knives to school in my area and all over the country really. One girl had one in her backpack and her mom found it before she left for school and she only had TWO WEEKS of suspension. Not to mention there have been 18 bomb threats in my school since the first day in September.

13? but thats the age when we start to need and learn social skills the most!
very important during teen years, and you left in your first teen year.
teen years is when are personality really starts to develop, but it cant develop properly without vital life social skills. Same goes for face to face interaction. Truth is, you DONT have all the social skills you will need during your whole life.

Like I said, it would be best if you move to a smaller, nicer private school, where people arnt a-holes.

and yes, I wanted to kill myself at one point, but it was because I had no friends or real social contact, and it drove me into severe depression.
Dont think that I dont understand what situation youre in.

Hellz here
wow, didnt know it was like that man, sorry for any discrepencies, but the truth is that life cant be learned, it's experienced, and a computer can only teach you things, namean?
and as far as friends go, there are always people that are "compatible with other people, and the only way to find out is to socialize. People will turn you down, but who needs em? others will be more than glad to befriend you so dont be discouraged
Hope this has cleard up things,
Hellz

Sorry, for the late reply, my computer died so I had to perform ANOTHER resurrection ceremony (AKA hit the fan with a screwdriver) and vuala! it's working again! Yaaayyyy! Now onto a more serious note. I'm not going to cheat on tests, sit around and eat doritos all day *stops and throws bag of doritos to the side* and get fat and all I do is nothing, I live out in the boonies and have nothing to do, I'm getting a job this summer and when I get my car when I'm 16 I'm going to join a gym and get really fit so I'm not so much worrying about that right now because there's really not much I can do about it because I don't have as much control over my life as I'd like to. So yes, for now I am stuck in this stupid house for another year and a half but oh well I'll deal with it. But I actually CARE about my school work, I know that if I cheat, then I'm in big trouble in tests and on the SATs and other things, it's nothing but more trouble plus I'm not that lazy. (altrade that doesn't mean I'm calling you lazy) And as for social activity, I'm very limited to that because of my surroundings, every weekend my step brother comes up to my house along with a friend (usually) my neighbor also comes up to my house and stays. That is really all the social activity I have right now and that's all I want. I have a disorder called "Social Anxiety Disorder" where I am extra shy and whenever I meet someone I instantly think they hate me, just from a first time judgement. I'm very much socially paranoid about what people think of me, I know I shouldn't care but I do and I can't help it. It gets to an obsessive point I obsolutely cannot relax when I'm around someone I don't know and I end up making a fool of myself because my mind goes blank and I'm dead quiet. So I don't want to meet any new people right now or anything like that, other than online. I'm hoping I'll just grow out of it and wait for my self-esteem to recover from public school, and it DOES recover after time. I just need some time, no A LOT of time from other people right now. So yes, I'm basically saying Cyber Schools are only for people like me, who cannot put themselves in the public at this time because they can't handle it. I know I'm not the only one. There's also another reason (besides the verbal torment) that I hate public school, time, I fear time so much. I don't want to waste my childhood being locked up in a place 181 days a year and 7 hours a day that I absolutely HATE, I know sometimes it's healthy but this kind of thing is NOT. I am physical proof that it is NOT healthy. I've developed so many insecurities over the years and it really really sucks I have -1000 self esteem right now and it's all because of public school. Just imagine all of your past friends all of a sudden shun you and begin hating you just because everyone else does, that's what I've been through and I'm sick of it, I'm waiting until school has MATURE PEOPLE in them. Hopefully by the time I go into a college/school there will be people that had the same problems as me that I can make friends with then finally I can live on.

As you can see, I feel very strongly about these things and for some reason whenever someone says things bad about Cyber Schools it feels as though it's a personal attack on me, I don't know why, but that's why I get so angry, plus I've been known to have a bad temper.... ^_^;
