Reboot: Starting anew with some of my old plants

  • #41
Haha! thanks B.

Its my parents house mate. I can't make a mess in there. Well...I do...but I kind of always clean up. I feel bad as my mom wouldn't be too happy to see it messy and she would have been the only one who cleans it up.

Some might remember my old frozen N. burbidgeae x edwardsiana that was frozen in Jan 2012. But since it was the farthest away from the inlet....the roots did not freeze. It took so long to come back. The only plant to live through the freeze.

What is the background material? ( The black stuff that's attached to the egg crate )

Reminds me of a product I saw online called Epiweb?

Its from the same company... hygrolon. See the previous page for a detailed journal of how I made the background.

Hi Vraev,
Congrats on your newly growing collections!
As I recall, you grow a Rajah before; do you still have it? and if you do, how's it growing right now?

wow. Surprised you remember that. I had a nice rajah before...two actually...but I killed them during my regular moving..from home to school (residence) and back in my undergrad.

I also grew a single seedling of N. rajah, but lost it during the freeze.

Wow Varun, everything is already looking amazing! I love those lowii seedlings and that villosa.

Really, really nice, Varun. Talk about a comeback.

So sorry to hear that...I was hoping to hear a more positive news about it.
Nevertheless, your Macrophylla looks amazing!

Thanks guys. I am happy to at least have the plants that I have now..and the fact that they are growing well. Its more than I can ask for. I think when I had the big tanks, it was always about more and more... there were always some plants that never thrive. Now its nice to hit a stable ecosystem which the plants appreciate.

So sorry to hear that...I was hoping to hear a more positive news about it.

yeah...It would have been nice if I still had more of my villosa seedlings and rajah seedling. But well..things happen. Maybe someday in the future, I can grow more of these species from seed.

The plants that will be living in it... a new package from Urban bog. Fantastic packaging. I never got better looking VFTs after shipping. These look picture perfect.

Thanks B. :) My telly has gone down too. Not dead...definitely not thriving. It needs intermediate conditions....so try moving it to a warmer area.

Updates on tank#2

So here is the new tank with its inhabitants. Brings back memories of my original start with CPs in 2006. Ha! I still remember saying "I don't care about other CPs, I just want to grow venus fly traps. :p "

Planning pots to be used

Now opening the plants from Urban Bog. Bought 2 of each varieties. Fantastic packing. These Dionaea muscipula look awesome.

Always loved "in action" pics of potting up plants etc. so here is my shot at it

14768535538_4d0f27caac_c.jpg

My third Cephalotus clone (although, If I recall correctly, one of our ol' time members might have been the source of the Cephalotus follicularisculture material for Rick at Keehns Carnivores...so in that case, this would be a duplicate of my original Cephalotus plant). :p He knows who he is.

I had the peat and sand mix soaking for a couple of days, but when I opened the tupperware, there was a rank smell which I never faced with my old brand of peat. I think it might be bacteria. Either way, I wanted a backup of my plants, so I potted the extra of each variety in a pure Sphagnum rubellium.

14768454479_7acca05d7b_c.jpg

My personal favourite.. A blood red rosette of Dionaea muscipula. Although, the ol' timers here know how much I love "Dente" varieties.
wink.png
... Perhaps in the future, I can get a "long teeth" variant of this nice rosette.

14954797702_79765174f6_c.jpg

Full tank shot. Also put my display cube and potted up another spare root division of my original Cephalotus follicularis to compare growth among my two tanks.

New stand for tank#2

A very exciting update for me. I hate making a mess at my parents house. So I am excited to finally clean up the second tank....which honestly I never thought I would ever get. But a gift certificate that had to be used compelled me to get one. :p But thats already done... here is my newest aquistion that I just got today. I was looking high and low for a good deal on this. Finally found a used one and I love it.

Love the clean look

There they are side by side

Closeup on the tank on its new pedestal. Time to start a major job to finish the interior. I have some crazy idea which has a lot of chance for failure...but if it works, it will be the exact look I wanted to achieve for a long long while.

Love the lines..hahahha

And there we go, as it stands now. I major major tech update will be coming.

I really can't wait to see it myself in action.

Next up, rigging the hanging of this fixture.
wink.png
Although after spending a fortune on this light fixture, I must say I am not too pleased by the intensity. My T8 dual fixtyre you see here seems even brighter. Lets see how it fares. One expensive leap of faith.

This thread is really giving me the itch to try terrariums again! It looks like the common practice is to top water, then find a way to drain off the excess? Or is just misting best? Either way, I love the pics.

  • #60
Thanks.

It depends on the plant. Some plants like orchids hate the misting system and they constantly get problems and go downhill. But others like nepenthes and most CPs don't care about misting as long as they get a good flow of water through the soil. They don't care about misting...atleast in my setup...but the consensus is that helis hate misting, cephs hate misting. But i find both these are alright...but actually some neps hate misting. Although I can't really separate them in my setup.
