Backlit Vertical Growing?

So a coworker of mine who also has a green thumb is considering trying to grow with a vertical wall in a dimly lit back wall of his kitchen. He also doesn't want it to illuminate the whole room. I suggested that a backlit wall, with multiple tiers for media jutting out from it, might be aestetchically pleasing. Has anyone ever seen/tried this or have any input on it?

Something like that, but entirely inside so needing artificial light, and instead of one above it shining down, it would be behind it, shining into the room, and would illuminate multiple shelves of plants.

Inside is normal but most are illuminated from the sides , front or above. From behind is difficult because the plants will close in so there will be shortly not enough light for the other plantshelves.
Will be a nice dschungle look though.

Backlit will not work properly as the plants will grow towards the light source and your view would be of plants curving toward the lights. The lighting would need to be in the front part that you would want to view. The real problem with these types of projects is that artificial lighting loses a lot of intensity the further it travels. So top lighting would only work if you managed your plants by lighting requirements, the ones at the top required more light while the ones at the bottom required less.

How tall of an area are you talking about here? If the area is not very tall a simple top light might work just fine.
